If you live among clutter and are not organized, has it always been like that for you?
I saw a question on another website asking how the reader feels in their space. I replied "I don't remember. I need to re-claim mine." That got me thinking that I can not remember a time in my life when I was ever neat and organized. I hear stories of people who have a life event trigger clutter and disorganization, but I have not heard about people who admit to never remember having the skill in the first place.
Ah hah never in my life have I personally maintained an organised and tidy area. When I had to work in a clean and tidy office environment, it felt almost emotionless.
A cluttered comfortable set-up works really well for some people. I feel most at home and calm in my own little cluttered space.
Others find it unbearable and irritating but I find it supportive in a way. My space. My stuff. My work. My world.
I currently live in a huge mess. My appartment is undergoing repair after repetitive flooding. Except that the repairs are not happening, The clutter built itself up to a point where I have to look out where i put my feet while carrying my baby 'cos I could trip over anything and fall on my face with her. I got into a huge depression (as big as the mess is) over our place. I was not the kind of girl that was always tidying big time all the time, but I did have some limited organized chaos going on that would get tidy every once in a while.
As a kid, I was messy according to my mom. One time, she had asked me to tidy my toys and I didn't. She put all them in a trash bag and threw them away. She was and still is a very tidy and clean woman, she would not have put up with mess. As it happens, my brother who was a very tidy kid turned into a messier adult while I did the reverse !
On the other hand, my husband has always had some horrible mess going on (I think I could call his mess hoarding to some extent). And though he claims that the mess we're living in is affecting him, he never does anything about it. He actually makes it worse by not putting his empty bottles in the recycling or throwing his trash away or even puting his socks in his laundry bag. And From what I have gathered from his parents, he's always been like that.
I think everyone has the potential for change for better or worse
I was the kid with the messy room, with my mom yelling at me to clean it up. I still have a cluttered, disorganized home. I try now to be a little better- the mess bothers me more than it used to. And I am trying to teach my kids to put stuff away when they are done instead of waiting until there is a huge mess- but that is something I have yet to master.
