How do you deal with family members that get drunk or high?
To me it depends what kind of drunk they get. There are talkative drunks, aggressive drunks, violent drunks, etc.
if you mean all the time they get drunk i would tell them to get a life. getting high isn't any better but i'd rather be around someone who smokes pot all the time then someone who drinks.
I am assuming that they have an alcohol problem. I am an alcoholic and I've been sober for 3 years. My family often excluded me from get-togethers, refused to take me in when I had nowhere to go, and wouldn't give me money when I was broke. I hated them for it then, but looking back, I see that they had no choice. I sought trewatment at detox well over 30 times before I got sober. Each time I went to detox, though, I took a little bit of hope with me when I left. Tell your family member, that if they are high or drunk they will be asked to leave. Even if they get mad, cry, yell, the important thing is to FOLLOW THROUGH with it. eventually they will realize they need help.
Understanding is very important when it comes to dealing with a substance user/ abuser of any kind. Before accusing or prosecuting a loved on for their addiction/ habits, its a good idea to know what drives them to want to use and weather or not their struggling with it and perhaps could use help. I'm an ex-addict that experimented with just about everything under the sun. One of the hardest things i had to deal with other than addiction it self, was the ignorance of other people twords what i was going through. I believe that no addict or user will stop unless their ready to stop. Trying to get them to do so can be extreamly frustrating for them and for you, resulting in anger, argument, possible loss of relationship etc. On the other hand if some one your close to severely harming themself or another person an intervention or rehabilitation is always a possibility. Just remember to stay calm, cool, and collected. Try to be understanding of the situation and stay strong. If you do this i think you'd be taking a step in the right direction.
Watching people make bad choices is very difficult. There are 12-step groups and other support groups available where people can go and discuss the options available to the family and friends of alcoholics and drug addicts. Relating to one another helps in finding the best solution for you. There are many ways to deal with family members - tough love is an option. Asking for help is the first step. Find out from others what their experience was and see what worked for them.
If there is an addiction issue, it can be very painful to watch but ultimately we can't make people behave the way we want them to. I'm grateful for the people who shared their experience with me when I needed help in helping others.
