   Is America really "The Land of Opportunity".
   
   We use to call it the land of Opportunity. Do you believe we can still call it that or have things changed?

   The great opportunities are still there if you are one of the 1%. For the 99% the opportunities are a little more limited, BUT not to worry: they can still enjoy the promised land while they are losing their homes, their jobs and go broke trying to pay off student loans, not to mention that without health insurance and with shrinking pension plans we can all live happy.
   Who will dare call America anything else, BUT the "land of opportunity"?

   The United States of America certainly is "The Land of Opportunity."
   
   In my case, for example, I grew up in a very impoverished household; however, by the time I was in my mid-20's, I had a college degree, a profession, and I was financially secure.
   
   And all of that happened because, in the U.S.A., there are unlimited opportunities for those individuals who are willing to work as hard as they can and to "walk the extra mile."
   
   Furthermore, there are literally millions of stories like mine.
   
   In fact, as I type this answer, a considerable number of U.S. inhabitants are in the process of advancing in life and improving their strata in a wide variety of ways.
   
   I repeat, the United States of America certainly is "The Land of Opportunity."

   Yes if you have a good work ethic, a great attitude and a little luck. America allows people to do what they cannot do in other countries and gives them a better chance to succeed.

   I agree with feenix regarding the fact that the United States of America is still the land of opportunity. When I was a small child we lived in a section of Syracuse, NY called the DP section, meaning it was where the displaced people lived...immigrants and the working poor. My parents saved, toiled away, invested wisely and we eventually moved to the suburbs. I started working in the sub basement of a 19 story office building, took industry sponsored courses, went to college at night, sometimes I worked up to 3 jobs, had a brand new house built by the time I was 23 and when I left the company I had started at I was occupying an office on the top 19th floor. Yes, that was an opportunity I took full advantage of and I believe they are still out there for those who do not want to rest on their laurels. I remember our VP calling us in every year and claiming how we had another banner year, but that in no way meant there was room for complacency. Also, if work started at 7:30 and you showed up at 7:32 you were placed on probation. Those were the rules and if we wanted to grow and thrive we followed them to a tee.

   I've done well here, but then I did everything right. The US is made for people who either already have money or who are good planners. It's not a country for dreamers, even though most people who live here are dreamers. It's not the best country in the world in which to live, but it has its perks for those who are objective and know how to use their brains.

   Yes it is. The problem is that people don't understand that opportunity is not a guarentee of anything. People have to work for what they want. For those who make it out to be that if you are rich it sucks, they obviously misunderstand the concept of our country. If you don't want debt you don't have to have it. If you don't want to lose a house, pay cash, if you don't want student loans work your ass off to go to a college you can afford to pay for, if you want a good job, start from the bottom and work your way up. If you want health coverage pay for it. If you become jobless fast food places and gas stations are always hiring, let go of their egos. Oppurtunity is not equal to hand outs. It is the ability to work for anything you want. I am grateful that I live in such a country and I am fearful of what it will become as the people who live here grow more and more reliant on the government.

   Things have definitely changed.  We are no longer where we were a hundred year ago.  We still have a lot of opportunities that other countries around the world cannot provide though.
