   This seems like bad policy here. I have commented on a few glaring inaccuricies and have been called a troll, etc. "I am just a writer and write what people tell me" was an answer yesterday. No need to tell the truth, right?

   i believe honesty is the best policy. i also believe in the saying "if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all". there are many times i find it hard to read a hub, mostly because english is not the writers best language. in this case i choose to say nothing about the writing as in time it can improve and i dont want to be reported for "harrasing" someone about their english. if the person has been here for a year or more and still writes like this tho i will "suggest" some improvements, but do it nicely.

      I have noticed this a lot also, your policy seems to be really good but it is hard for me to follow at times. Something to work on!!!!

      I agree with your approach, if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all--and saying it as a comment is like yelling  "your ugly" across a crowded room!
      
      I just keep my mouth shut and move on.

      Is it like yelling? Today I read a hub title "Dangerous Vaccines for Dogs" that did not discuss that issue. Would it be wrong to tell the author to focus? She has only been writing a few weeks.Are we not supposed to help each other grow?

      in a case like hers, i might gently suggest that hubpages frowns on hubs that dont have much to do with the title and such a hub can be reported. new hubbers need help in a lot of areas.

   Ah, that's an interesting question... Whether it's a forum or anything else, I always try to be constructive in everything that I say. When I'm reading content from an ELL or an ESL writer, I some times very kindly suggest that if they'd like help from an English teacher, to contact me and I'd be happy to help them. If I'm completely at a loss because I know the writer is a native English speaker, but just a very bad writer, then I move on and say nothing. Really, I don't think that it's worth it to tell them how bad of a writer they are because it usually elicits an angry or defensive reaction. Unfortunately, that's human nature.

   I usually will stop reading a hub if it is really poorly written.  I don't feel leaving critical comments would be helpful. A private message would be better.  So if I do comment on a hub I am honest and try to say something positive.

   Criticism only opens a door for an e-fight.  Not everyone takes the constructive type well so I am very honest in my ratings (votes, feedback).  Most of the time I will simply stop reading a poorly written hub.  I also take into consideration how long the person has been writing (on Hubpages) and how well their English language is.  There are a few factors, but I leave my honesty to how I rate the article. 
   
   The last thing I want is a confrontation and to discourage a hubber.

   Why would it be my place to tell someone that's learning that they're not good? That's just mean and arrogant. If it's not to your standard, just move on.

   Comment honestly on Hubs. If you give moderate comments generally, your ‘Hats Off’ will definitely have the potential of making someone’s day. And make sure negative comments do not appear condescending. read more

    Yes because I try to make my comments include constructive criticism.  If it's really bad then I don't leave a comment at all but that's usually when it appears that the writer just hasn't bothered to proof-read or hasn't written a hub within the guidelines (& that doesn't include someone whose English is not up to scratch because of it being a second language).
