Sick leave - do you take it or let it go?

We get 10 sick leave days a year but if we don't take it, it's not carried over to next year. So what's your view on it. will you take at-least half of those days as sick leave or just let it go?

If you are really sick then you should have it otherwise not. There are companies that pay staffs who do not take sick leave.

I am in a company who doesn't care, if you take sick leave or not and doesn't pay anything extra if you don't take it. It's bit uncomfortable to take a sick leave when you are exactly not sick, but i like to take 1-2 sick leaves.

American's take among the least amount of vacation time! We have this tendency to believe being human and taking a break is toxic. When really, it's everything that we need. I'm sure you work very hard Damodar Bashyal, why let all of the days you rightfully get to rest and enjoy life go to waste? At least use up one of these days to do something that will make you really happy!

Exactly Becky Bruce. Even if our heart says it's wrong, It's ok to take few sick leaves as it's our right. And, Yes when i take leave I refresh myself and give extra input on work next day.

I say you've earned them, so take them. Most companies and large corporations don't have any real loyalty to employees. I say this because after over 10 years of working for one, they laid me off when this new guy took over. He later got fired for embezzlement. He let me go because he knew I would turn him in. He got rid of all the old employees, and brought in his friends who wouldn't snitch. The company didn't care that he had let some great employees go.
They are only out for themselves, and will let people go in a heartbeat if it suits their needs, so why feel guilty about taking days you've earned. They certainly won't feel a thing if they let you go.

That's right. I have heard so many people being fired after long service as they are replaced with new generation. If the company doesn't care and appreciate our hard work, why should we not take our sick leaves. Thank you for feedback.

When I said "old", it wasn't referring to age, but to employees that had been there a long time. It happens to both young and old. I was only 25 at the time!

To cloverleaffarm, You know it!  Most companies and corporations are only concerned with the bottom dollar, nothing more, nothing less.  An employee is just a cog in the machine. If the company wants to fire, they will fire even good employees!

Great point cloverleaffarm! There are far less corporations than there are workers yet the majority seems to be getting the short-end of the stick here.

My company only offered six days of sick leave. You could also use it for going to the doctor, or taking your spouse, child or parent to the doctor, or staying home to take care of them when they were sick. So, it would be pretty rare for me to not use up six days a year. I think if I had sick days banked and was in danger of losing them, I wouldn't have to be feeling too awful before I'd be tempted to call in sick.

our company used to give 5 sick leave days until we had one new employee who said it's law that we must have minimum 10 days. Owner knew this before but didn't told us.

Play the game I say! Like people have mentioned the big boys don't really care about the average worker. The have accounted for these days anyway right so why not take advantage?

The only time I wouldn't abuse the system would be if I was working for a company who truly valued me and showed it, or for the family which is the case now. Otherwise, give me that days pay while my feet are up on a random Monday. God knows I've earned you enough money!
