Why do you think the programs and initiatives targeting obesity seems not to been successful?
The obesity rates are skyrocketing every year here in USA especially with the younger populations. Why do you think this has been a challenge to control?
Because 'The Men Who Make us Fat' have control over the governments of the world.
I agree, the policy makers have a fair share of the blame. It is true.
I think there are three reasons why the war against obesity is being lost.
1. The cheaper food is the more fattening food. Most people are cutting costs
on their grocery biill instead of other areas, AND food prices continue to rise
while salaries have flat-lined.
2. People are getting little or no exercise. Children and teens are spending more
time in front of the computer, xbox, ps2, tv and dvd/dvr players. Video games
keep our children occupied but they don't get any physical exercise.
3. Most don't take the time to buy and cook good wholesome food. Their lives are
so busy, rushing from place to place, they just don't take the time to prepare
good nourishing food. Instead, they grab something on the run, which is
usually fast food, high in fat and calories and low in nutritional value.
People have good intentions and I truly believe they want to eat healthier and get more exercise, but because of their lifestyle and the economy, they lack the motivation to make any real or long-term changes.
Thanks rgalloway56. I think you've nailed it, the economy and lifestyle.
I think the programs and initiatives targeting obesity have not been very successful because some people are set in their ways. They don't want to change their habits. For instance I know someone that is obese. He says he wants to lose weight but he does not want to change his habits.
Another problem is exercise feels like torture. At least it does at first. It is hard to get people to start exercising regularly. They associate exercise with pain and junk food with pleasure. So they do not want to give up their junk food or start exercising. I don't really like junk food and I associate exercise with pleasure and relaxation. However it is hard to convince some people that exercise can feel good and that they don't need the junk food.
Interesting, so it all about the perceptions and getting them to make that very first step towards health life style. Thanks.

Why do so many people dispute or avoid the facts about the benefits of nutrition, diet, or fitness?there is more information and scientific fact today than at any other time yet obesity and other dis-ease proliferate. What are the contributing factors to the seemingly declining health of our nation?

Does America really have an obesity epidemic and if so, why?Is it all too much food? Too much bad food? Bad stuff in our food? No exercise? Changing insurance standards? What is the problem (assuming there is one) and what is the answer?

There are conditions/disorders that can cause weight gain, but there are also lifestyle changes that come with them and control it. In my opinion obesity basically comes down to bad habits, bad choices and laziness. What are everyone's thoughts on this?
