How to pick out a great door to be installed on your house?
Any step by step guides and suggestions on how to select the right door for your house? Front door and back door if possible.
Great post - I look forward to reading this. We have decided to retain the vintage doors on our home but the garage service door must be replaced. The carpenter arrives this weekend to measure and guide us as to our options. I know size is an issue and I know the depth of the door for the lock set is an item that matters when ordering a new lock/handle/knob.
I will be sure to follow this post - thank you! Very timely for my family.
ther are lovely doors on older 20th century houses made of solid wood these are excellent my husband and i did this
You may have already picked you door by now but there are different things to consider depending on what your needs are. Are you installing it yourself? Just beware, the proper install of a door is one of the most important considerations for a door that will work and last for years. Do you have a carpenter or handyman that you trust if you're not doing the install. They should be a good source of what is available. What is the age and price of your home. An older home you may want to use a wood door but they may not carry much of a warranty. Otherwise there are some nice alternatives with fiberglass. If it's a newer home steel can be alright but pay attention to the thickness of the steel. Cheaper steel doors have thinner steel that can dent easily. 20 gauge is good. The biggest appeal to a door is the glass you put in them and the options are numerous. The bad news is that decorative glass can run the price up on a door rather quickly. Then there's the lockset to consider. Get a lock that carries a lifetime warranty, this usually means it's not just a plated finish but solid brass or bronze. Locksmiths are a good source for getting the best locks but you may also pay more. Hope that's helpful.

Can you tell me the advantage of steel 2 x 4 over wood 2 x 4?A contractor and carpenter are doing work for me putting in a frost wall. It doesn't make sense for me to use a steel 2 x 4 because it conducts heat (cold). Wouldn't wood be a better choice?

How much should I have to pay to get a new front door painted and installed? We ordered a front door for our house, but it needs to be cut to have the door knob and lock fit it, plus it needs the hinges, to be painted and to finally be hanged. How much is a reasonable price to pay for someone...
