The money earning issue.  I have a quote I'd love to get opinions on.

This person shall remain nameless unless she wants to be recognized.  But anyway, I read this quote and I would love to hear from the people that are earning from Hubpages.  The quote:

"You won't start making good money until 80% or 90% of your traffic is coming from outside HubPages."

    True?  Untrue?  Comments?

I would say that it's true.  Particularily if you only have a few followers.  Not all of your followers will read your Hubs and even fewer will purchase an item from one.  I actually think clicking on other Hubber's ads is against the terms but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Even if you're just paid for page impressions, if most of your views are from outside HP you'll make more money.  If you're looking to earn money you definitely want people from outside HP visiting your pages.

If you're getting most of your views from outside HP it signifies that you are ranking well in search engines or people are mentioning your hub elsewhere.

I haven't started making "good money" so I'm not sure whether the percentages are correct, but on the face of it, it does sound accurate.

Hubbers can look at your hubs and you might get some earnings from their impressions.  But to get clicks on the ads and purchases from your eBay and Amazon capsules, you need to be able to get people who are outside the Hubpages community.  As nmdonders said, we aren't allowed to click on ads.

Also most articles that Hubbers read tend to be ones that have been recently published or have been shared.  You have to keep sharing those hubs and keep bringing attention to them.  This makes the revenue on them pretty short term.

The ones that have proper SEO techniques will be found by the search engines, and once you write it, you can pretty much let the search engines market the hubs for you. That is where the residual income comes in, so the more of those hubs you can write, the better. Of course, that is a lot easier said than done, at least for me.

Also while the statement may be true, it doesn't mean that internal views don't have value.  I would think that search engines would consider the number of views as a determining factor on where to rank each article.

I just thought "90%" was an extremely high number.  So it's true.  Yikes.  Thanks, people.

    Definitely true!

Expanding your audience beyond the boundaries of HubPages is critical to both recognition and monetary reward.

If your traffic outside of HubPages drops, your earnings will follow.

Great content and keywords with long tail descriptions of what people are interested in are the ingredients to writing success.
