Do people even know what the word psychopath means?

I see this word tossed around often around here (3 times in the forums in 10 minutes for starters), often in the wrong way. So do people even know what the word means? Or is this the common term for anyone who does something bad now?

    Hey peeples,
No. And I wished they would look it up in a dictionary. This word is used too fluently and is very offensive.

Definition: a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.

Not many people do. I only understood after attending a lecture at the college, then decided to write a hub about the differences of psychopathy and sociopathy. I still re-read that hub to remember the differences. http://lburmaster.hubpages.com/hub/Psyc … Sociopathy

I will only say one thing, at this point.  I hope you will accept what I say as a very positive comment, because I will stake my life, my education and my reputation on the blatant fact, that you, received a TOTALLY, irresponsible, uninformed, and erroneously-defined diagnosis.  I don't know who the Dr. was.  I don't WANT to know.  I would report him/her immediately to the American Medical Associates Ethics Committee.  We can only hope he/she no longer practices. This is egregious, IMO.
I thought long and hard to comment on your recent hub in terms of this topic, and I decided against it, unfortunately.  I was extremely bothered by it and was quite outraged.  You do yourself an enormous disservice, defining yourself according to some flippant & glib opinion of a voodoo witch dr.
You may accept or reject this peeples, of course, but I am 100% correct.
    Peace, dear woman..........

4 different people in 4 seperate facilities  at different ages all gave me the same diagnosis. I truely wish it was wrong but knowing how I relate to others I doubt it! No offense taken at all!Knowing makes me better because knowing helps me fix it!

4 people? 4 facilities?  Sorry, honey, doesn't change my mind in the least.  Per the list of symptoms in your hub, I have no problem believing you displayed all of  them. But in NO way does that equal the diagnosis you got. Period THE END.

Lol! I wish someone could tell me what it was then, I've been diagnosed with so much it all runs together. Better yet how about they just don't call it anything but tell me what to do to make it better.

NOW, you may be on to something......"just don't call it anything."  Labels used to define characteristics, behavior, personality.....only valuable to Professionals.  They have no place in the hands of everyone. One day soon, we'll talk..OK?

I agree, the term is overused, just as schizophrenic is mistaken for split personality. ( TV comedian recently joked, "My dad's schizophrenic, but he's good people.") Another word often missused is, ignorant. I've seen it used as an insult so many times. It actually means lacking knowledge or awareness, uneducated. It doesn't mean that someone is deliberately being offensive, but that they don't fully understand the situation. What's the saying... never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.

This could all sound horribly wrong written down quickly late at night. I'm just trying to say I agree the word is missused and missunderstood, like many other words. People have a half-grasp on the meaning. This is where education comes in, raising awareness of the true meaning.

Sending you hugs, 'cos it feels like you need some.
