Do most followers "like" a writer only because he/she maintains a great number

   Do most followers  "like" a writer only because he/she maintains a great number of followers?
   
   Many could say that a writer is mostly followed because he/she has a huge number of followers and not because of the content of their articles or hubs.  What is the reality of this?

   I follow a writer because of his/her  articles which touch on topics that I am interested in. I am not particular about how many followers does a writer have .

   I'm not sure but I hope that's not the reality. What would be the advantage? I follow people who I can learn something from or whose hubs I find interesting, well-written, and/or exemplary.

      Hi Janshares.  Thank you for answering.  It is interesting because I do think the same way you and Globe does, but once I had the experience of a healthy group of writers asking among themselves to vote up, etc. to enable a writer to "win" !st place.

   I follow a writer who has articles that interest me or who has made several insightful comments on some of my hubs to which I read and comment on theirs and have learned quite a bit from them. I am not concerned with how many followers they have or how many they follow. I am, however, cautious when I see someone very new with 1000+ people they're following. I want to interact with someone who wants to interact by commenting and reading - not just to be a number.

      KDeus.  Very interesting comment.  I also think that a great number of  writers who have been here for a long time should open the doors to new ones if their articles are good and informative.

   Actually, I'm generally deterred by following a writer if they have a great many followers. It's the part of me which is wanting to support the under dogs, I guess. But yes, as KDeus said, they need to have hubs which are interesting and informative, especially if they have a unique view point, even if I may not agree with it.

   I sure hope that's not the case. Hopefully our fellow Hubbers are not so shallow as to create a popularity contest. Personally, I don't care whether a writer has 1 or 1,000 followers: I follow writers that intrigue me, are talented, have something to say, can teach me something... I guess I don't even look at the number of existing followers a person has; it's certainly not one of my criteria for following someone.
