What are the blocks to YOU representing YOUR community in Parliament/or the Senate?

Many people agree that for 'the man/woman-in the street'-Its an uphill struggle or virtually impossible to get to be an MP or a Senator,a few of the main reasons being -one needs to be wealthy,-or know people in high places,or have both fortunes. So bearing this in mind how can our Government(s) be truly representative of the mass populas, and what needs to be changed to remedy this problem?

Get all corporate money out of Government and educate the voters on how things really work.

Time and money.  You need plenty of both to do the job properly.  I would advocate subsidies for aspiring representatives but a cap on private contributions to election funds.  Also, get more democracy into schools.  We graduate knowing nothing about the mechanics of collective decision making or representation.  A democracy is only as good as it's education system.

Ha! I would never get elected! I would refuse to play politic games and would never conduct an opinion poll before I made a decision. My decisions would be based on what's right or wrong, not on political correctness....so even if I did get elected once, I would probably be recalled or lose the next election! smile Truth about what's right, what's wrong and governing the way our founders intended isn't exactly popular anymore....

Alas, too late I realize that this is a question for British(?) people! Sorry for bringing up the "founders"! wink

Be it England or the United States, the issues facing law making bodies are more complex than they use to be because of growing populations, demand for services, the cost of maintaining an infrastructure, providing health care, assistance for the elderly and many other things that were not considered by the creators of either system.

I have no desire to be an elected politician. I would have a difficult time rasining money, since I would not accept amounts over a certain amount. I do not belong to either major political party so the seniority system would keep me tucked away in some corner of the Capitol and thus my only outlet would be the media, which might not like my ideas or views and thus ignore me. Some elected officials serve with distinction, most do not. That is an issue that can be corrected by the voters--over time--but it can be done.
