Do kids still say the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of the school day?
So many people still question this? Don't many elementary school students still recite the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of the school day?
Depends on the district. In many parts of California, no. In the some districts in the southern US, yes.
I don't know, Victoria, because I haven't been in the States for a few years. In Thailand, the students all stand at attention and sing the national anthem at schools every morning.
They do recite it here in NW Pennsylvania. I know that there are areas, like some around Washington DC, where they no longer recite it though.
That's neat, Glimmer Twin Fan. How do you know about Wash DC? From people who live there? I'm curious. Weird, since it's where the capitol is! :-)
They do here in my school district, and expect they do everywhere in Texas. I've heard them saying it over the intercom system in the high school with all classrooms joining in, and it's said in all the public schools regardless of grade level here in this school district.
That's neat! I didn't know that high schools said it much. I thought that it was usually elementary schools that say it. Interesting!
They do in my school district here in Virginia. We also observe a moment of silence as well.
I asked my kids for you Vicki and in Elementary School the kids said the Pledge every day but in Middle School - they only say it on Mondays! I suppose they just want to keep them sharp and repetitive enough to repeat it? IDK!!
Thanks for asking your kids, Kelly! Interesting that they do it only on Mondays. I guess that's good enough! :-)
I am in Southwest Ohio (just outside of Cincinnati), and they do im my kids school district. I can't speak for anywhere else.
Gotta say "Yes!" for Cincy since it's my former home. Good to hear it is still said in many schools around the country.
Teaches12345, I'm in New Richmond school district.
Yay! So many people are passing around stuff saying it should still be in schools. Sounds like it is!
I can tell you one thing for sure Victoria. And that is elementary school students, who are Jehovah's Witnesses for one, do not, or never had recited the pledge of allegiance. According to a neighbor of mine who is of this religion, and reiterated to me; that his children do not because of their particular religious beliefs. As far as other children who are non- witness well....that is a great question!

Good Point! When I was teaching I had a student who was JW - I made him my attendance runner so that he wasn't in the classroom during the pledge.
Yeah, one of my best friends was JW, and she told me that they didn't--or observe holidays or birthdays. We weren't in Elementary school together, though, and our school didn't do the pledge in high school, I don't think. I'm sure she sat it out.
When I was teaching special education, the kids said it every day.

Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school?Do you think that a child should be disciplined for not standing to recite the pledge of allegiance? Or do you think that any disciplinary action be considered unconstitutional?
