Why doesn't my profile picture appear next to my articles in a google search?

I added my g+ 'posts' link in my hubpages profile, but my picture doesn't appear in the results. Any suggestions?

Did you add your hubpages profile link to your Google Plus profile?  You have to do it both places.  And then it can take a few weeks for it to be verified (I got an email telling me it was verified).

Several hub page members have written about it.  If you search for google authorship you should see their hubs or maybe they will see this.

I know it does take some time.

It looks like you missed a step in the process of setting up Google authorship. If you go to the Google Structured Data Testing tool ( http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets ), you can test whether or not your hubs are correctly configured for Google authorship.

In your case, you've listed your Google plus profile with HubPages. That's step one.

However, you didn't list HubPages as a website that you contribute to on your Google Plus profile. That's an important step two.

Go to Google Plus. Click on "Profile." Click on "About." Scroll down until you see a section titled, "Links."

Click on "Edit." You'll see an area titled, "Contributor To." In that section, click on "Add custom link." Enter the URL of your HubPages subdomain, and click OK.

Then, you should be all set up. If you go back to the Structured Data Testing Tool, you can confirm that. Some people still have problems after that step, but it definitely won't work until you fix that.

I have problems after that. The tool confirms I'm the author of my hubs but my picture doesn't appear in search results beside my hubs. I'm not sure what to do now. Do I need a more "close-up" picture?

I've heard conflicting things about that. Altho Google says you need a recognizable thumbnail, it's not always the case. Did you get an e-mail from Google after you set up authorship?

Thomas, you need to be patient. However, even if your confirmed to have set up authorship, if Google doesn't feel your articles are good enough they may not allow your picture to show up next to your articles in search engines.

Is your profile picture on Google+ or just on HubPages?

I don't remember getting an email from google confirming I had set up authorship. I use the same photo on G+. So far I have put my HP profile in the contributer to section on G+, and have my G+ link on my HP profile. That should be it right?

Yeah, those are the right steps. Other people mentioned getting an e-mail after they set it up, and when I went back and checked I got one with the subject, "Welcome to Google Authorship!" It could be that it's a sign of approval from Google. *shrug*

Be sure to add your link to your profile along with your picture. You will have to copy and paste if using an iPad.

Read Glenn Stok's excellent Hub on this subject and follow it to the letter.

... and give it some time to show up in search results.

    Everything brianrock says is correct.

But there are a few things missing:

You've only been here for 4 weeks. (I don't know how long you've been on G+)
Google recognizes authority in their authorship rankings. You can't just throw up a profile and a pic and expect it to show up, Google even specifies that there is no guarantee that your picture will be displayed.
You need to build author authority. THEN you can expect to see your image.

Also, if you are buried in the rankings, your pictures are less likely to show up. I have several articles where my pic shows up for some searches (Where I'm ranked #1-3) and the same article does *not* show my picture for other searches, where I'm further down.

You've done what you need to do to allow Google to use the image, now do what you need to do to make Google *want* to use it. That is - write, and build authority.

A small addition to other people's answers here. My image didn't show up next to my articles until after I'd received a "welcome to google authorship" email which came about 3 months after I'd set it up.
