   At what age do you let your children choose what to wear?
   
   Of course when they are younger, we need to choose clothes which are weather appropriate and are comfortable.

   When they were old enough to earn their own money and go out to do their own shopping.

   As soon as possible in my opinion. It's not only good for them (self esteem, independence, etc...), but it's one less thing you'll need to worry about once they get it down right. Plus, it's so cute to see them pick and choose what they will and then get dressed. Obviously the younger your kids are at the time that they show an interest in dressing themselves, the more 'supervision' they'll need, but that enables you to make sure they are dressed appropriately for weather and activity.
   
   My oldest was ready to dress himself by the time he was 2. He liked picking out his own clothes, and while they still end up backwards at times (he's 8 now), he is happy to dress himself and have control over what he wears.
   
   My youngest isn't quite 2 yet and he has more interest in taking his clothes off than in putting them on himself, though he does like to 'pick out' his own clothes. I let him wear what he picks on days we're staying inside, but there are some Definite changes when it comes to going outside to play.

   I have always let my kids choose their clothing. When they were very young it was with some guidance telling them that no, pajamas are not right for church, or that kind of thing. But my kids have always made good choices that way from the time they were very young..

   my boys have chosen from young ages with a bit of guidance. I'll tell them if it's cold "pick out a long sleeve shirt and long pants" for example, but they do pretty good at picking their own clothes. 
   
   My youngest is 4 and he has a habit of putting things on backwards, but overall he does pretty well.  My oldest used to do well, but now he's a teenager and his choices are not always what I'd necessarily pick lol.

   The earlier the better. The best way to start is by giving them a choice between two outfits or sets of clothing. Teach colors by saying, "Do you want to wear the red shirt or the green one?" Teach weather appropriateness by saying, "Would you like to wear the jeans or the sweat pants? Since it is cold out today, we'll leave the shorts in the drawer and wear long pants." The more you allow your children to choose their own clothing, the more they will understand that choices and consequences are connected. It gives them a great deal of self-confidence and teaches responsibility at a young age.
