   What is an artist:?
   
   I am looking for opinions on what qualifies someone to use the title artist..
   
   I took the picture of the bridge; but, I don't consider myself an artist, although a few of my photos have won awards.  (This one hasn't won any awards, because I have not entered it into a contest.)

   An artist, in my opinion, is someone who expresses an idea, view or belief with the world on a platform that appeals to the senses, rather than by simply explaining it. This would include, for example, photographers, painters, actors, dancers, architects, musicians, chefs... So many people who are artists!

      I think that is a great answer one of the best I have ever heard., though it kind of leaves out writers and poets. That's ok.

      I like the explanation, although I have found that there is a rough balance between the  intellectual and sensual aspects of the artists I have studied, or talked to  I am not sure about acting, because I have had little exposure to actors.    .

      I have had exposure to actors, acting, it is an art, so is writing, poetry, and this answer is a good one, not complete but good all the same I think. I am not sure if emotion is a sense as it seems to be fired by them, emotions need including.

      Garreth, I didn't mean to question the validity of acting as an art, but was commenting on my general lack of knowledge about the subject.

      That's why I put... There are so many people who can be considered as artists... Too many to fit into an answer box :-)

   Back in the 1920s a German put a latrine on exhibit in an art gallery. It wasn't a latrine he made. It was a commercial object. Apparently by simply putting it on show he could call himself an artist. After coming across this guy the question has me stumped.

      I know the work.  He did sign his name.  If I did that it would be vandalism at best,. 
      He had a body of work before he presented that piece, so perhaps reputation has a role?   That's one of the reasons I am asking the question.

   Somebody who creates that which is considered art and I have tried to define art many times in the past with no great success, so I would rather quote the following interpretation at the link below.

   I say this because to define what an artists really is, it is important to first know what art is.

      I considered asking "What is art?"  This question module  isn't big enough.  There is a lot of material written on the subject.  It seems to change every few decades.

      I did consider this answer as well: I am what I think I am, I am an artist because I consider myself to be one, I have much work to back this statement up, so anybody who considers themselves to be an artist is one, especially if they can back it up.
