Is there something you can do to make the country you live in a better place?

No matter where you are in the world, do you think you can do something to make your country a better place to live for others and for yourself?

I'm trying to improve education in the US. This is not the straightforward project you might think. Our schools are mediocre because the people in charge of them were sidetracked by ideology. They are concerned with creating a certain kind of child, a little socialist, but they are not deeply concerned with academic and intellectual matters. So we have a very peculiar situation. It's as if you had a restaurant where all the chefs really didn't like food.

So we have a lot of sophistry, a lot of propaganda, a lot of lies actually. And the main thing I'm doing is trying to explain these lies one by one. Children can't learn to read with sight-words. Reform Math, in all of its manifestations, is a terrible way to teach children arithmetic. Similarly, constructivism is an inefficient way for children to learn anything. At this point I have many hundreds of articles and videos on the Internet. These articles analyze the phenomena we see in our public schools. Typically these phenomena are mysterious and hard to grasp. So it's fun for me to work my way through each sophistry and tell people what is actually happening. (I have a dozen pieces on hubpages if you would like to see an example.)

Very sad given that in my day they were among the best in the world.
I barely made it through before the fall.

Why did you delete my comment to Bruce, pstraubie48? I said nothing profane or irrational. Did you simply disagree with what I said?

I do not even recall what the comment was and I do not recall deleting it. I have been having some issues with my computer recently so it could have happened. I have never deleted a comment (except my own) since I came to HubPages.

As an expat there is little I can do but I try to promote better driving.
I urge all expats to respect the countries they live in and to realize that education and intelligence aren't related and that a person can be very bright but also very ignorant.
So treat the people as equals and don't talk down to people.

This was a question to anyone...who lived in any country.

I live in India... The environment here is deteriorating rapidly... I can plant trees to offer a few people and animals shade from the scorching sun...
