If there was an omnipotent God, would he be able to create a stone he couldn't lift?
There is an omnipotent God and always has been. However, He would not sacrifice one attribute (wisdom, onniscience) for the sake of another (omnipotence). Advice: You should ask serious questions that deal with the eternal issues of the soul and salvation, not try to disprove God's existence with puerile enquiries.
I am an atheist but I had no hidden agenda in asking this question. I thought about putting it in the philosophy section as I was curious as to what answers I would receive. I enjoy reading them. I do not have an interest in disproving God.
I love this question, because it shows how desperate people are to disprove God. Its in the same category as can God make a square circle. The category is "illogical". The simple answer to this is no, God can't make a boulder so big he cant lift it. This has nothing to do with a limitation on his power. No amount of power can make an illogical question, logical. One more point about God's power. People think there is nothing God cant do. This isn't true though.God cant sin, God cant go outside his nature, God cant do illogical things.
Yes he can. He doesn't have to lift it, he can crush it to pieces then lift each piece! He's smart, you know!
This question reminds me of the scientist who argued with God that he could make man. God said, "Okay, go ahead." The scientist said, "Let me go and get some dirt first." God said, "Oh, no. Make your own dirt." God is omnipotent, but He won't waste time doing foolish things, just as Jesus (and He is God) refused to throw Himself down from the mountain or do any of the foolish things the devil tempted Him to do.
If Jesus is God, why didn't he save himself from those bastards who crucified him? Not sure what God is anymore.
He didn't save Himself because he came here with the purpose of dying for out sins. He was not taken by surprise by the cross, as it was His purpose for taking on flesh.
That's a great little story quildon and really drives home the point that no one can create what God creates and no one is greater than God.
I agree with you Quildon. And Shams: I don't know if the soldiers who crucified him knew their parents or if they were illegitimate, but had He called the 10,000 angels He could have called, there would not be salvation.
ShamsAlAriyaf: nice try to sneak in a reference to the book Sun of Gnosis [2012]. Mohamed used falsification of the Judio -Christian Bible. He was an uninformed reader of the Bible who tried to rewrite it for his own purpose. Jesus Death is clear
As God is creator of ALL things, the obvious answer is no. God is all powerful, he can do whatever he wills to do. That being said, I think the omnipotence of God is not so much about physical ability or inability, it's about being able to do all things - he can heal the body, the heart, and the mind; he does miracles, he can do anything. But since you're talking about creating, God created the human mind, the brain, which is so complex and so synchronized man has not been able to tap into more than 10% of it, and that 10% is mind boggling. Creating the heavens, the planets, solar systems and all those unusual phenomenon; and all the unique animals, the list goes on. I would encourage you to read the creation story in Genesis 1 and 2 and read more of the Bible too.
First, any stone that you would pick would have to have a weight to it. There is no such thing as an "infinite stone" if it's a material object. So, whatever weight God assigned the stone, He could also lift it. So, I think the most straightforward answer is that, no matter what weight the stone possessed, an all-powerful being could not only lift it, he could change its weight, or simply will it out of existence. More profound, I think, is that an omnipotent being is that by which "power" is even possible. The idea that God would be limited by any physical mass is inconceivable since He is that which makes materiality possible.
No!
Given, that an all powerful god can do anything.

Dr. Haddox
There IS an omnipotent God. He created you and He created me. He SPOKE the world into existence so he could SPEAK a stone into the sea. HE IS ALL POWERFUL AND ALL KNOWING.
Speech is a POWERFUL thing. He created that too and He will strike those who mock Him, if not today, then tomorrow.
Sleep well tonight.
I thought God was also benevolent? If so, why would he strike me to cause me emotional harm? If by 'striking me' you mean that he would cause irregular and unsightly events in my life, then bring it on. Life is life; good or bad.
It is up to Him to create a stone and pretend not able to lift it up. It's all His sweet will.
I think this is a very sentient question. God made me and sometimes He cannot lift me up. But I am His Stone and I must lift myself to Him. God makes thinks not meant to be lifted. We are called to leave them be. And go lift another.\
Many Christians, for instance think they are tasked with lifting all. Judging others and deciding good and bad. That stone is to heavy to lift.
My stone is light and made of love, tho' I am heavy and to hard to carry. It is a dichotomy.

If the God is almighty, can he create a stone, so heavy, that he could not lift it by himself?

If God is Almighty, Omnipotent, All knowing etc.etc, why he do not stop the bad things his children are doing (especially in his name) and the bad things happening with his children?

After all the claims made by biblical religionists that the biblical god is all of the above, none of this god's actions seems to fit these lofty roles. For example, the biblical god has to be worshiped, which hardly seems to be an omni-anything trait and not worthy of any leader of men. I decided...

I just posted the below in another thread, but, because it can get lost within all the other posts, I decided to repeat it in it's own new thread. Here it is:I am so amazed!!I look at the human body, and with what little I know, it is SSSOOO intricate, complex and perfectly well tuned to function,...
