What do you know about ECT (Electric-convulsive Therapy)?
Also known as electric-shock therapy is years past
My father had ect when I was in my junior year of college. He was 57 at the time. I know of another person who has had ect as well. I don't exactly know what kind of information you would like to know. A specific question would be helpful since this is a bit of a delicate question for a layperson to answer.
I am just curious about individual experiences whether (pardon the pun) negative or positive, and also I want to know why the person received the treatment.
OC, My father was terribly depressed.Therapy didn't help. He cried everyday before work. This was back in '66, so ECT is different now. ECT kept him going for abt. 10 years along with medication, but his personality changed. He had more ECT in '76.
KatyWhoWaited,
Thank you so much for sharing. I wonder how much ECT has changed since the time period when your father was receiving the treatments. And if it is okay to ask, what was the personality change? If not cool to ask, I understand.
My father seemed to over-compensate after that. If our neighbor downstairs was bringing in the groceries, he'd run downstairs to help them. His smile always seemed forced. I'd say with the medication, he became a bit manic. He didn't seem real.
Billie Kelpin,
Thank you for providing more details. One of my concerns I had after reading the article was whether the person would undergo noticeable changes in personality. Your response sheds light on that question. Again, thank you.
I had a family member have a series of ECT treatments at a local VA Hospital about 20 years ago. And I can tell you, that this treatment for serious depressive cases, should only be used as a last resort. The person that I mentioned, had way too many, and the ECT treatments actually had a very negative effect on them. Making them very ill, and really not helping improve their overall depressive state. But then again depends on the care giver, giving the treatments, and the individual person receiving them.
I had wondered how the ect of today compared with the use in prior years. There's an article in a magazine (Time, perhaps?) about ect and how far the treatment has come. Thank You for your comment.

Why choose alternative treatments for cancer instead of conventional ones? Why do patients seek alternative treatments for cancer when there is a pile of research data on conventional therapies that gives a patient their odds of beating this disease?
