What is the best handmade gift you have ever received?
Have you ever received a handmade gift that you truly cherished? What was it and what made it so special? Do you ever make handmade gifts for others? What types of gifts do you think are most appreciated?
I actually have two gifts I've received that I love. One is a plain afghan my mom made for me. The other was a quilt my sis-in-law made. The main pattern of the quilt was made by my great-grandmother, but she never finished the quilt so my sis-in-law did. I make handmade gifts when I think of something the person would really like. Most of the time I do drawings, although I have made some dream catchers for people. I think almost any handmade gift is appreciated by the person who receives it because the person took the time and effort to create something for someone else. Of course, there are exceptions, like the ugly sweater no one would be caught dead wearing.
When I was a child, I had very little toys. Someone gave me a used Barbie which I held on to for dear life. Then, when I was 7, someone hand knitted me a dress for the doll. It was like gold to me. I cherished that dress so much and wish I still had it.
Someone hired me a few years ago to make thank you cards as a shower gift. They ordered 150 identical cards. I heard that when the recipient opened them, the entire room stood and cheered. So, I do think handmade gifts are appreciated. But on the other hand, I've had someone tell me that they prefer store bought gifts. I limit giving handmade gifts to people I think will cherish them. It's too much effort and time to waste on someone who doesn't appreciate it.
I think quilts, knitted winter woolies, memory albums, and paintings are some of the most appreciated gifts, but I'm sure there are a lot more I'm forgetting.
I only give handmade gifts, the last was a crocheted baby blanket for my friend who's had trouble carrying to term but is due with her first in just a few weeks. I also just completed a crocheted cotton and glass bead necklace that took me the course of 8 months to complete...that'll be a one-of-a-kind item, I'll never do that again lol!
I get them all the time too - we're a crafty lot. The gifts for my first born are still on display 8 years later - an egg filled with gemstones, jewels, and a silver dragon that was to be opened upon her arrival, a "wise man" with the face of a halved black walnut shell that watches over both my babies now from a high shelf in their bedroom, and a grapevine dream catcher adorned with symbolic trinkets.
Great question - made me all warm and tingly Off to knit a washcloth now...
That glass bead necklace sounds amazing Lee!
I've learned a native american beading technique that helps me pump out a similar version, just hollow on the inside, in about 3 days. Much preferred!
I have a beautiful quilt my mom made. She gave it to me on my 21st birthday. Many moon have past since then but I still have that quilt. I cherish this the quilt, but I must say the best handmade gifts I received over the years were anything made by the hands of my children, and now my grandchildren. Any thing made by their little hands can immediately make me smile and lift my spirits.
