What is the best handmade gift you ever received?

Holidays are coming up and I try to shun the whole commercialism that is so rampant and do things that are heartfelt and nice.  Handmade gifts can be some of the most memorable of all and I've received many nice ones - a handmade checker set, a handpainted set of nesting dolls, handmade jewelry, and even a handmade comic book featuring my boys as super hero characters.  What is the best handmade gift you ever received and why?

I made a photo book for my best friend with all her best memories (I had to hunt down a few people at one point) and it was a hit. She cried when she got it and she still adores it, 4 years later!
My friend has made me candles and I absolutely loved them!

The photo book sounds lovely.  It's always great when people still remember something years later smile

A dear friend and co-worker handmade a baby blanket before the birth of my last child and gave it to me for Christmas that year. I was so touched by her thoughtfulness, hard work and the obvious care she'd put into making it, it was truly a gift. She could've easily went out and just purchased one and I would have loved it no doubt, but she put her "heart" into the one she handmade and it touched me deeply. It was obvious that she'd worked on it every day after work or in her spare time for months on end. To know that you mean that much to someone is very heartwarming. I've never forgotten it.

That to me is what makes a handmade gift so much better - you can feel the love and dedication that goes into it and feeling so loved and appreciated is priceless.

My two boys made a small booklet for me for my birthday. They were 6 and 8 years old. And they had made it without any help from grown ups.
The small book had drawings of our house (outdoor and indoors).  There were coloured drawings of our family and our cat.

Actually, it was the look on my husband's face on Christmas morning when he opened a very special scrapbook I had made him of our little love notes to each other through our 18 years together.  He got very emotional and teared up.  I enjoyed putting it together, too.
Also, I did love a special jar of friendship tea from my mother one year.

That's so cool smile sometimes the act of giving is a gift in itself.  I remember a similar reaction when I restored old heirloom photos for my parents and put them on a digital frame.

My mother crocheted a giant turtle for me when I was young, about my daughter's age. i loved that turtle to tatters and miss it terribly. It was so filled with her love.

The best handmade gifts are those made with love.  smile  Sappy, I know, but still true.  It would be difficult to say what the best one was, but at this point in life gifts of time with loved ones and friends are the best.
