Do animals lie?
Animals communicate with each other but do they also lie while doing so?
Wow that is a good question!
I don't think they can lie though... I believe that in order to lie, they need to anticipate their actions to have an effect on the other animal, other than what they really feel. Animals live in the "now" so I believe it would be hard for them to anticipate something like that.
But we discover more and more everyday about animals, and we always discover that they are more intelligent than we thought, so I guess we cannot know for sure!
Some animals like apes, scrub jays and dolphins have been shown to be able to anticipate the future, however I think in order to lie an animal would have to posses a complex natural language.
Yeah I was thinking of apes too... they like to joke around and do pranks so they are more like us than let's say dogs...
But yeah it would be a complex thing to lie.
But I think I was thinking mainly of dogs when I answered the question...
I think they do in their own way. When my cats do something they know they're not supposed to when I'm not around and find out about it later, they give me a look that says "I didn't do that". You know, all innocent looking.
