How old is too old to drive?

Is there a point where a person is too old to get behind the wheel of a car?

If so, at what age would that be? Is it fair? Should a doctor decide it?

I don't think it is a matter if age. Rather than the actually ability to drive safely. Being able to see the road, having the reflexes, and so on. When people loose their ability to drive safely, then that's when they shouldn't drive.

I agree. It’s a difficult area to manage. I’ve never met an older male who felt they needed to quit driving. It seems more common in women to know when to quit on their own. I suppose a doctor should handle it?

I totally agree with cjarosz. Everybody is different. Some people age a lot more gracefully and keep their manual dexterity abilities/vision/reflexes longer than others. I think as you get to a certain age, lets say 65, that you should get tested a lot more frequently (maybe every 6 months) rather then only when your license expires.

If your body is not responding to you then how could you drive ?
A certain age could never be the criteria. However a person's enthusiasm will decide it. And definitely a doctor can surely decide it.

I agree with the others who say driving shouldn't be limited by age. I've known 70+ year old people who are perfect drivers and I'm sure we all know middle aged people who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel. Getting and keeping a license should be based on the person's mental and physical ability to control the vehicle. That determination should be based on a doctor's opinion; however, will all doctors stick to whatever the criteria is? Also, the DMV should be able to look at people of any age and say "We can't give you a new license (or picture) until you get a physical".

My grandma is in her 80's and has all her faculties about her. On the other hand, I have seen people in their 60's, who due to disease or injury, were in no shape to drive. I think their should be a more thorough assessment of elderly drivers to truly evaluate whether or not it is safe for them to be behind the wheel.
