What steps can we take to have a more positive outlook on life in 2014?

We must admit that many things are happening in the world that is distressing. Yet there are many things that are praiseworthy occurring all the time.

Focusing on the negative aspects of life can have adverse effects on our mental health. So what can we do to be more positive this year?

Research and experience shows SMART Goal setting (often associated with employment), when applied to personal goals can enrich a person's life with purpose by providing direction, energy, sense of achievement, happiness, progress, motivation, commitment, confidence and positive thinking.

Rather than setting New Year resolutions which are often busted before the end of the first month (for many people before the end of the first day of the year), goal setting provides an interesting challenge.

Using SMART goal setting for personal goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound) ensures a greater chance those goals will be successful. For myself, reassessment of those goals regularly is not about admitting failure where goals have not been reached by the specified target, but acknowledges that sometimes the goals we set may not always be achievable given our lives circumstances or personalities.  We tend to impose a great deal of pressure on ourselves to perform, so being flexible is a necessity.

I take the approach of the sage. That is, full responsiblity for my life. It has been said, be in the world, but not of the world. The nature of the world is chaos, conflict and ego by media reports. The sage simply removes is thoughts and feelings with detachment. Then he is free to focus on pleasant things. Each person can create their own life and experiences in spite of propaganda and the world. Just pull the plug. In the end, the world will not take responsiblity for the monsters they are creating with the negativity. So it's better for the individual to have the wisdom to remove their negative suggestions, apocalyptic predictions, gloomy reports and tragedies. The joy, beauty and laughter is in the individual who creates it for himself and others.

Thanks for sharing Sri T. Yes, each of us has to make the conscious effort to pull our minds away from the negativity, and focus on what is praiseworthy.

I think a positive attitude begins at home or rather within ourselves. Are we happy and content with what we are doing in our lives, how we treat people, how we relate and care for people. Once we take care of the "man in the mirror" and who we are in the world, our attitude improves drastically.

Thanks duffsmom. What is inside us (positive or negative) will radiate in our daily lives for all to see!

By accepting things which we would prefer to ignore, and then singlehandedly setting oneself onto a particular group of tasks aimed at an outcome in life.
