Should the press show more constraint in taking pictures and footage from grieving people?
For instance regarding the malay plane MH370 the press dived on the relatives like vultures. Your thoughts?
I do think this is wrong, but is the problem with the press, the people who pay for the pictures, or the people who view this as entertainment? The press does seem to relentlessly hound people of interest with no regard for the emotions involved. However, the press wouldn't be so persistent about snapping photos if someone out there wasn't paying good money for them. Which finally brings us to the fact that if it weren't for people interested in viewing these photos, then they would not be worth money. It seems to be a vicious cycle, ultimately fueled by money.
Yes. I understand why the relatives where so offended when cameras were pointed at them. Who would want to be filmed or photographed during their weakest moments? And I agree that the media should at least give them some privacy and time to express their emotions. But then again, those cameramen where just doing their job and are passionate about capturing the true reaction of the passengers' relatives.
You are right. The professional cameramen are there on assignment. It is up to the newsdesks to decide what to use and what not to use.
I would LOVE to see more respect from the press for grieving people. But as long as we have media outlets willing to pay for such photos, I can't imagine them hiring or using many photographers that have a defined sense of boundaries. For some reason these news outlets think that just because the public may click on the headline out of interest, we want to see the suffering on faces of victims and family members. While I'm sure some people out there do, I don't believe this is the case with the majority of people. There is, I think, something fundamentally wrong about media moguls that assume everyone is as insensitive as they are.
Excuse me, please, for getting on my high horse here. But yeah, such insensitivity bothers me.
