Shrill female voice-overs in Japanese anime and manga series: annoying or cute?
Practically every female character I have seen in a Japanese anime or manga series is voiced-over by some actress using an extremely shrill voice. While some viewers are sure to find these exaggerated "childish" voices attractive, they have managed to pain my ears so badly I have sworn off watching the shows altogether (even as some story-lines were pretty interesting!). But I am wondering, am I alone in this reaction, or have other viewers found these voices just too painful to deal with?
First I want to clarify, are we talking about English voice actors or Japanese?
If it is English actors I agree with you. That being said, I can't stand about 95% of any dubbing; be it male or female.
Japanese actors on the other hand, I don't hear it. Are there characters with annoying voices that make you want to rip your ears off? Absolutely. However I would never describe it as a rampant problem. More of a slight occurance.
What were some of the shows you had in mind?
The ones that come to mind first are Death Note, Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist.
I can only speak for the Japanese version (and the fact that I shamefully have not sat down and watched Bleach or Fullmetal). Death Note I have to imagine you're talking about the English version because the Japanese voice cast does a great job.
The Death Note series I watched had Japanese voices with English sub-titles.
Huh? Well I guess I am one of the people who just don't here it.
It can be both, depending on the character. Most of the time I can't stand it, but it makes me laugh because they sound like they are in pain. All the time, makes you want to slap them lol
Some people might not find their voices annoying because of different beliefs and the culture they are accustomed to. I somehow feel that characters with outlandish voices are interesting because I like to experience something new. I don't mind if they talk in a foolish way if the anime has a compelling story and hooks me right at the outset.
It depends. Like most of the time are made by benders, they often arrange people with weird voices to make weird roles which can irritate. But most of the time are even funny.
