We also live on a dirt road.  We put a heavy layer of Seven dust granules down.  It has helped.  It is supposed to be good for ticks though I did find one on my cat's ear the other day.  They roam though so it still might be better for your dog.  Spread in when it is raining though.  It says on the bag that humans cannot be around it ;0 so I spread mine when it was raining so the dust was controlled by the rain and did not stay in the air too long.  Wear a mask so that you do not breath it too.  It sounds awful and very poisonous, but I have done it many times.  I also live in the woods and I am not winning the war on the bugs here.  Spreading Seven is cheaper than any pill or flea treatment.

I sprinkle brewers yeast on my dogs food every morning. I buy it at the bulk food store and for about 5.00 dollars it will do me for a year for 2 dogs. You can also sprinkle it on their fur. I know it works for fleas and my 2 dogs have never had fleas and they're almost 8 years old. For ticks though I don't know if it will work.

It depends how bad the infestation is, if its really bad get Frontline from Petsmart.  Treat with a topical treatment, kills them dead and do not shampoo the dog for about 2 weeks. You can order online at :http://www.1800petmeds.com/ this is probably the cheapest.  Let this treatment work then shampoo the dog, I highly recommend:
Isle of Dogs Shampoo, I order online, they have different makes for different needs and have a Website: https://www.iodogs.com/c-2-shampoos.aspx

Their shampoos last a long time and are great for the skin - order direct or on Amazon where you can get some great deals.

Repeat the topical treatment every month for at least four treatments to ensure all eggs etc are gone.  By that time your dog should have a great glossy coat and feel a million dollars.

Note:  it is really important to treat your dog regularly in the summer to avoid tape worm infestation.  People misunderstand that Tape worms are caused by infected fleas so treating your dog every month in the summer is especially important!

As far as the dust goes a good groom every day to brush out the dirt is essential - TIP: also groom the dog's coat prior to every bath time!
