In my opinion, when we ignore the more important things in our day in order to monitor or brood over something/someone far less important, that's where obsession starts.
For example, say person X and Y went out for a date and after a week, X messages Y asking if they can meet up again. Y doesn't answer and X gets more frantic with every moment. X even goes into social networking sites and checks Y's last activity to see if Y is active online or not. This is just the boundary line of obsession.
What if X just watches Y even though they have never had any form of relationship. X tries to find our if Y is single/married. X is happy and sad at the same time to see that Y is involved yet not married. And so X has this space for Y thoughts.
I think in this case, it's better to find out how committed Y is to the partner, why Y hasn't married him/her. If it's due to commitment issues, pursuing Y would be time waste. But if it's unhappiness, X and Y has a good chance..
