Why is C squared in the famous formula E=MC2?

0C is the speed of light. I have also been confused why C is even used in the formula, that too exponentially. Theoretically, travelling at the speed of light would make time travel possible. So this formula is supposed to be calculating the amount of energy spent by an object of mass 'm' to time travel, if there was such energy
