How to retain what I have read?
I really think my brain has a shot off valve for information that I don't use. If I read a book I forget most of it within a couple weeks. I'm attending school and struggling with retaining information I have read just a couple days ago. How do I retain the information I am reading?
Look up mnemonic devices - they help the brain retain information long term. They're basically exercises that help make information easier for the brain to absorb. I don't believe in shameless self-promotion - but I wrote a hub on them. I learned a lot about using them when I used to work rooms control in a hotel where I had to know the names of repeat guests and also when I went to school again myself a few years ago. It's harder when you get older, but not impossible I put the hub in my featured hubs if you want to check it out.
Hello peeples.... I think Christin has already answered this question. I think this will help you greatly. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I think we all get a little heated over a variety of subjects. Of course we are all entitled to our own beliefs. Does that make us right; of course not. Like the old saying goes.."Opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one And I know I can be a rear end at times. Im working on it. Have a great day peeples!
Peeples, it sounds like what you're reading doesn't interest you. When I was in school I was able to retain what I read in subjects that held no interest for me (history and science) long enough to pass the test the next day. Once my pencil was put down, that stored info flew the coop to make room for information that I could use and meant something to me.
I know my response didn't help. I don't know how I retained the info long enough to pass the tests. I do know I'd find myself having to re-read quite often because my brain wasn't absorbing what it considered to be non-consequential. Perhaps my subconscious retained a few of those repetitions.
Jot down notes in a notebook while you read.
Rewrite important info more than once if you need too.
There is a correlation between handwriting and remembering,
I do this trick to help remember song lyrics. . .
BTW do you mean shut or shot?
I think Christin´s advice on the use of mnemonic devices is good but I did not find them useful to retain information long term. They were great to help me get through tests though.
Long term, I feel that the best way to retain information is through relating what you need to learn to your real-life situation. If I sat in class and thought "this is just like what happened when I saw that dog with roundworms", or whatever, I was always able to recall it later.
When not able to do that, I just memorized and got through. Lots of coffee and cramming might help! Good luck.

I have noticed a few questions asked by newbies that have been asked before and so many times it is probably impossible to count. I have noticed comments of annoyance at the same questions being asked yet again. I am sure at some point I will have been here long enough to get every bit as annoyed.I...
