What are your thoughts on the Ice Bucket Challenge?

This challenge has gone viral and donations of more than $88 million has flowed into ALS org.  What are your thoughts on that?

I think it's sad that people only pay attention to charity and causes when something silly like this draws attention.  I think it highlights our need to be more attentive to creating solutions in this world without the distractions.   I was challenged and refused to do it because it's a fad.  I give to charity and do works of kindness when it's a true act from my heart; not when I feel pressured to by friends or social media.  There are other causes that effect a lot more people than ALS; so I am choosing to give to another cause. I think perhaps a donation to project read instead.  Working with that program is a real eye-opener and directly helps people improve their lives. Literacy is a plus for everyone.   Call my cynical, but I'm not a bandwagon type of person.

Yes, charity and kind works must be from the heart.
But, I must say it is indeed an innovative way to create awareness and collect donation for a cause.
People seem to have fun while creating the awareness, donate and pray for the people involved.

definitely secret, very clever way to draw attention.  I just wish it didn't take stuff like this to make people pay attention.  So many worthy causes in the world. If everyone did something small each day - imagine what we'd accomplish.

I think it's pretty dumb but at least it's raising money for a good cause.

Ha ha!  But, it is really innovative and creative and I think those who participated enjoyed themselves while doing good:)

I had heard about this challenge but had no idea what it was about.  I have to agree with Christin...although this is for a worthy cause, it saddens me to know that society needs fads to become more involved in charity when this is something we should do each and every day.  Good question.

Since I'm a quintessential Libra, I have two thoughts:

    1. Whoever thought this up should be a raise. Best viral marketing campaign of the year!

    2. The ALS folks have a record of testing on animals, so every time I see one of these videos pop up on my feed, I cringe a little.

      1) Ya, you are right, the best viral marketing campaign ever!!
      2) Hopefully they would seek alternative testing with the huge fund received.

it is good that society wants to raise awareness but the true contributions are donations in terms of money or time you can give to the charity

I can't really say anything bad about something that's drawn attention to a devastating disease and raised a huge amount of money for it. Sure, we can talk about how it wastes water or how some people only do it because it's a fad, but at the end of the day I think it's a positive thing.

Raising money for a good cause is never a bad thing!
In this downturned economy charities have to come up with fresh new ideas to motivate people to give. This was a very creative original idea.
However there will always be a "backlash" from cynics whenever anything goes "viral" or "mainstream" in a major way. The focus should be on how much money is being raised instead of slamming those who choose to participate.

It makes people more aware of ALS.  And personally I have not heard much about charity events for this devastating disease.  With the IBC many people are becoming aware and helping raise the money for this.  I know a lot of effort is going into Aids, Cancer, Breast Cancer, diabetes and Autism and these are all good organizations to donate to.  ALS is something that needs to be researched more

I think the notion of increased and widespread awareness for an unconsidered cause is admirable, but the challenge should be open to whatever charity the person donating money feels passionate towards. In the past couple months since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has started, the movement has raised millions of dollars, funds that wouldn't have happened without the donations. Imagine how many charities could benefit from something like this. ALS is absolutely a horrible illness that needs more funding and attention, but there are a lot of disorders and diseases like that - who's to say one is superior to another?
People should be donating regardless - celebrities who participate should be donating thousands since they can afford to - and if it takes dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to cure diseases, then so be it.

I just wished I had thought of it for my favorite local charity.

I suspect that its promotional value has about run its course.  An alternative would be to spend an hour soliciting friends for an ALS donation.
