Should there be separate seating for men and women in public transport?

Is it a good idea to prohibit one from sitting next or adjacent to opposite gender on public transport? Should there be designated seats for women-only on public transport?

    No. That would be ridiculous!
Most people on public transportation are either reading the newspaper/magazine/books, sleeping. talking on cell phones, playing video games, or zoning out to music from their headphones as they head to work or home. I can't think of a single reason for bringing back segregation in any form. If they don't want to sit next to you they have the option to stand.

I think this question was asked in jest to get people's reactions.

No I don't think it is necessary; unless my daughters are traveling on it...

Okay, this question is satirical.  This question was asked as a parody.  I get it now!  You really can't be serious regarding this question.

Public transport can be avoided from such a rule. But there can be many other places where this rule can be applied.

This is a pretty loaded question... I don't think it would be a good idea to prohibit men and women from sitting next to each other, but I also don't think that having women-only seating available on public transport is a bad idea at all.  I mean, how many women have had some sort of uncomfortable situation involving some weird guy with little to no sense of personal boundaries on public transportation, or other public situation?  It would be kind of nice to be able to sit in an area that would prevent such situations from occurring.
Of course, I have no idea how one would go about implementing such an idea in this day and age, judging from all the other comments to this question...

Quite frankly, even though I don't ride public transportation anymore, I would love to see that for the future!
When I had to use Chicago's modes of transportation years ago, I would've preferred to sit alone sometimes.  There were some men that were so heavy and plain ignorant in the way they sat  or there was the person that fell asleep and started to snore...a number of reasons come to mind.
In this day and age especially, if I were a young girl, I'd be more afraid if some creep sat next to me!  To say no to someone if they asked, could also be a problem as well.
