We always think if we have a certain item it will make us happier, but it never does so then we try to find something else and so it goes on.
Having desire and goals gives us something to get excited about, to strive for, and it make life worthwhile. Most of us need a reason to get up and get going. When one has nothing to shoot for or look forward to depression often sets in. One of the reasons why you see Billionaires turn to charitable work causes is because they need new goals and challenges. Ambition and desire are important.
The day you stop wanting or desiring is the day you start to die.
When we've scratched off everything on our bucket list there's nothing left to do but wait for the "grim reaper".
Excellent, very intelligent statement.Wanting is the impetus for one to become educated & successful. If people never wanted more, they would be mired in the poverty consciousness, mindset & psychology-always being content w/little,never impro
Just to provide an alternate viewpoint, consider this: What if people never desired anything other than what they have right now? How would that affect our lives?
If everyone was suddenly content for their lives to stay exactly as they are, economic progress would come to a grinding halt. No one would have any desire or drive to improve anything or try to make themselves happier or try to earn more money to do more things. Eventually, our species would probably go extinct.
The point I'm trying to make is that "wanting something you don't have" is not always a bad thing. Progress in any form is dependent on the desire to change one's circumstances. This can be taken too far and become a negative, harmful desire, but really discontent is more valuable to us than we may think.
Good question.
P.S. I didn't see Scorpio's answer until later, but he has expressed the same idea.
Excellent point! If cavemen would had been "content" with living in caves it's unlikely we'd have homes with indoor plumbing, autos, trains, planes, phones, most of what we have today. Someone said "There must be a better way!"
Desire is living
There would be no advancement in civilization if people were content. People would be happy in poverty & ignorance, never striving to go beyond their present conditions. Humankind was endowed to always improve, strive & want more.
Humankind was endowed with the impetus of improving one's condition especially educationally & socioeconomically. Humankind wants to make conditions better than it was previously. That is progress, growth, & evolution. One either grows or dies.
Intelligent people always want more. That is why civilizations always grew & advanced. If humankind was contend with things the way they were, we would still be caveperson. Or better yet, we would be extinct. Many cultures that were seemingly content with the way things were are either being encroached by more advanced civilizations or are slowly becoming extinct.
If people did not want what they did not have, many would remain impoverished & uneducated instead of becoming more affluent & educated. The premise of wanting more is what guided people to make better lives for themselves & especially their children. This premise is also responsible for people going to countries who have better socioeconomic & educational opportunities than their own countries. It is human nature to always want hence to work for more.
Those who are satisfied with things, never wanting more, are those who do not believe in improving themselves. They oftentimes live at the lowest common denominator, being happy with only the rudiments & no more. They also have a poverty mindset & consciousness. They furthermore view others who want more as greedy, materialistic, even immoral.
They are the ones who detest more ambitious people, viewing such people as immoral, even debauched. They are the ones who are anti-wealth, seeing socioeconomic wealth as evil, even unnecessary. They are the ones who strongly, even vehemently, argue that people can be quite happy living at the minimal level, adding that it is totally egregious for anyone who desire to live beyond this minimal level.
Because deep down the mind knows that we can have what we want. And should have whatever we want. It is a spiritual law. Every child is grasping for the outer out of curiosity and fastination. Unfortunately, it is an illusion. The emotional state of satisfaction is what they really want. That's why some rich and famous people feel unfulfilled at the height of their careers. It is because what they are seeking in the outer objects and people can only be fulfilled by the inner thoughts and feelings. If they know how to be fulfilled from the inner state, then they know the source. It's ok to have the money, the toys, the fame, but understand that they are empty, neutral objects. You are the being, the life that is alive, the reality. The source of happiness is inside, not in the objects. The objects may or may not provide comfort and security. Some people have it all and still go on seeking or are afraid. It depends on their thinking.
greed, we always wanted to have something or someone we yearn to have but end up using wrong methods
Because we are humans and it is in our basic nature.
But we should know the reason for which we want it. If our need is temporary and we can manage even without it or we want it just because someone else has it, is absolutely wrong. It serves no purpose.
Contrary to this something asked for a good cause or reason never falls under the category of being greedy.
