What’s the Hardest Thing You’ve Had to Give Up?

Generally, when we give up doing something—it’s because of health or there is another person involved. People give up smoking because of the adverse effects it has on that person’s health both short and long term. Some people have to give up certain foods because of health issues—I’ve had to reduce my input of chocolate because now that I am older it bothers me. The hardest part about that is that I really enjoy chocolate but it is necessary to find another treat.

So—what’s the hardest thing you’ve had to give up and why?

Hi, Jacqueline. I'm not sure if this is the kind of answer you're looking for, but for me, I've had to give up people. Sometimes, no matter how much you care about someone, you need to let them go or your memories will torture you forever.
If you want a food answer, I try my best to refrain from sugar-filled sweets. But I usually give in : )

It was a good answer and I totally agree. Some people can be more hazardous to your health than any food!

An interesting question. There are so many. Which was the hardest 'thing'? Selling a truck I drove for 24 years was a real struggle. I wish I had that truck today even with its rusty spots. That begs the question . . . have I really given it up, even though I do not possess it today?

I feel the same way about my 1997 Ford Taurus ... I really loved that car but for some reason the windshield wipes wouldn't work when it rained. And not even the technicians at Ford could fix it because it worked ok when the sun shined.

Fast food has been the hardest thing for me to give up. I wouldn't say that I used to eat a lot of it, but having that fast, convenient option was always something I enjoyed. When I became a vegetarian (roughly 2 years ago), I had to quit most burgers and sandwiches (which I described as my 'favorite' food). For the most part there are alternatives (veggie burgers and sandwiches) but every once and a while I will pass a mcdonalds or a burger king and feel that itch.

I lost the most weigh and felt my best after giving up fast foods. It's surprising how many calories they can put on me.

That would be ice hockey; I had to give it up while I was comatose and during my rehab. Thank God, I was able to eventually return to the ice. I am hoping to keep playing until life-end. I have been playing hockey for 1/2 a century now. Although my Better Half claims I am only 18 for the third time...
