   Easter Eggs: Plastic or Real?
   
   For a small Easter egg hunt on Easter morning (as opposed to grand events in parks with hundreds of children), do you prefer to use plastic eggs filled with candy and treasures or do you like to dye and hide real eggs? Why?

   The times I hosted Easter Egg hunts, I used the plastic, cardboard, and the larger papier mache  types, because the children would step on the real eggs accidentally and the smashed eggs harmed their shoes and clothing - and made a mess. If empty artificial eggs were thrown down, I put them in recycling - too beat up to use again.

      Patty, I'd never heard of cardboard Easter eggs and I've always thought of paper mache eggs as beautiful, time-consuming art pieces - I didn't know they existed as an option for egg hunts! You learn something new every day, I suppose. :-)

      A couple of party stores here have some cardboard and paper mache editions once a year, but I think cardboard is used in Asia as well. Japan and China I think. I saw that someone made eggs from paper mache egg cartons from Whole Foods once.

   We do both - a batch of "real" eggs for coloring/eating, and plastic ones to fill with little trinkets (small candies, loose change, etc.) for the kids' egg hunt on Easter morning.
   
   We switched to the plastic eggs a few years back when a family friend told us that once a "real" egg that was missed during the "hunt" wasn't found till several months later when it started giving off a certain, shall we say, fragrance...haha

   i prefer using real eggs, actually egg shells. I don't recommend painting hard boiled eggs and then eat them later. I prefer to blow out the fresh eggs, scramble them , wash the egg shells and paint them

   I am not into Easter egg hunts and all that as I use to be with the kids getting older but I just cannot settle for the plastic eggs! I love coloring and doing weird design on the eggs and you don't need a kit and sometimes not even any dye if you have the right things on hand. Generally the eggs are just wasted but if they have been cold in a fridge all night they are probably save to eat but since I fix deviled eggs too; there isn't usually any room for them. They are just a fun thing to do!
