    What are the 9 ways that middle, upper middle, and/or upper class,successful parents can motivate a

    very intelligent yet unmotivated young adult who really doesn't have a foreseeable goal, haven't any desire to do anything significant with his/her life, or better yet just meander aimlessly throughout life?Being born into an environment where there are myriad socioeconomic and sociocultural opportunities in addition to lovely, involved parents DOESN'T mean that the child is going to be highly successful, even having a modicum of success in life.There are children with all the opportunity available yet are simply............NOT MOTIVATED!

    When you say "young adult," what age are you referring? Young adult as in a senior in high school, or young adult as in 18 and above with a high school diploma?

      The contextual definition of young adult in this instance is anyone from 18 -25 years of age. H/she hopefully has a high school diploma, is attending college or technical school.

      The child probably lacks intrinsic motivation, not external, so there is very little by way of gifts and rewards that will encourage him/her to do better. Unfortunately, intrinsic values difficult to establish...

    As hard as it is, Adult children need to be allowed to make their own way. Life is hard outside of home and when they are meandering but making it, then they aren't doing as badly as many racking up debt for a college degree they may use to make lattes with.

    My husband and I are huge believers of "natural consequences." If they are trying to pay rent, groceries, buy a car, etc., they'll get it together. A parent is supportive but not enabling. We made our own way in the world, mistakes and all, and here we are. If our parents had tried to put ultimatims or even suggestions in our heads, we rejected them or resented them. They should be allowed to as well. Time to down the helecopters!

      I totally agree!! Too many parents interfer with "natural consequences," and as a result children fail to learn important life lessons.

    First, you must determine what talent the child has displayed in the past. Secondly, what kind of grades or how the child progressed in school. There are a few things that needs to be looked at in order to know how to motivate the child or children. Communicating with the child as to what the child wants to be in life and work it from there.
