What are the advantages/disadvantages of being different from the society around ?

Not everybody wants to conform to what exists around.

Different doesn't always mean bad. People conform because they see no other alternative that will benefit them in a greater manner.

There are many advantages and disadvantages but the ones I might know are:

Advantages: Thinking outside the box, realizing your strong character, showing your creativity by doing what is not necessarily asked by you, opening the minds of others, having few friends but they're all "real"

Disadvantages: Being shunned/resented, having to work harder than everyone else to achieve a self-realization, being potentially lonely, rarely being able to share your thoughts and people trying to coerce you to conform to society because of their ignorance.

The issue of being different is quite paradoxical.  It's both revered & reviled.  While there are messages extolling the virtues of being different, being different is often viewed as odd, even weird. read more

It simply heightens awareness and thus for comparison. Now if you are exposed to attitudes that accept and acknowledge differences with a positive attitude you have the potential to view things with a lighter view.

The only disadvantage would be your attitude, depending on how you embrace change or what's different from what you know speaks volumes to your character and how you raised.

Being different from society is good for you wherein you are able to enjoy freedom and satisfaction of living your own kind of life. You may try to bring awareness among others in the society and get recognized if you succeed in your endeavours.
But, the disadvantages are, you will face much criticism, opposition and  may also risk the possibility of getting alienated entirely from them for ever.
It depends on your determination, courage and ability to convince people that your attitudes and approaches are right and correct and are beneficial as a whole to all of them.
