I won't be barbecuing this holiday. It's just me and my son and he works for a Nissan dealership. They have huge sales during any holiday, which means he has to work.

I'll probably make myself some shrimp, which he doesn't eat. I take advantage of the nights he won't be home to make something I enjoy. My first choice is always shellfish. He'll eat fish, but not shellfish and he refuses to eat leftovers, so I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to planning a menu.

The plate you're showing above looks yummy (except for the ketchup and relish)!

Hi Sha, oh yum on the shrimp.  I do that same thing when my husband is out of town and I sort of treat myself to something I love.  I tend to love anything and everything on a hotdog LOL.  Enjoy yourself and your shrimp!  God bless America!

I only have a small, tabletop indoor "grill", and if I had any on hand then I would have turkey franks.

Hi Kevin, turkey franks are yummy and healthier too.  Enjoy your weekend.  God bless.

While this holiday has come to be seen as the traditional kick-off to the summer season, as I've aged, I don't see it that way anymore.
For me, it's a somber day of reflection and remembrance of those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to give us the country we have today, and which we are in danger of losing if the money-grubbing politicians cannot be stopped from catering to mega-corporations.  I hope the sacrifices of all those war dead will not have been in vain.
A little known fact is that Memorial Day began just a month after the end of the Civil War, back in 1865. It was organized by black veterans of that war, to honor their own dead who had fought with the Union to end slavery, but who had been overlooked in the run-of-the-mill, business-as-usual post-war celebrations.

Wow, DzyMsLizzy, what a great and profound answer not about food! Yes, my dad served and suffered with PTSD when he returned, so we all suffered. I wrote a serious poem about his suffering and me too as a child listening to him. I have it highlighted
