   If it ever existed, it died in the 80s and the Reaganomics initiative took a dump on it and then set it on fire.

   to paraphrase the late, great George Carlin "It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it".  That being said, I do believe that hard work can lead to success, but I also see the reality that there are many who are willing to stomp all over anyone to get ahead.  Sadly these special interests have bought and paid for the current government and we have levels of corruption like never before.  If people ever really want a shot at the "American Dream" they need to wake up and stop the destruction of the middle class and the redistribution of wealth to the top 1%.  Then you'll see more than just the lucky few here and there have an actual shot at the "American dream"

   Americans are the only ones who believe the American dream is dead!
   People from other countries still believe if they can get here and work hard they can make something worthwhile out of their lives.
   In fact statistically we have more "self-made millionaires and billionaires" then we've ever had before!
   An old adage goes: "Whether you think you can or think you can't you're right." Without a doubt there are probably people who came here during the great recession and have amassed wealth.
   Most Americans dream is to get a good job. Most immigrants from other countries dream is to start their own businesses.
   The whole family pools their incomes together to buy or start a business in their neighborhood. Each new generation goes to college.
   Perception is reality.
   When one comes from an abstract poverty stricken nation to America they're bound to believe anything is possible! It's as if they complimented a woman/America on her dress and she replies;
   "This old thing?"
   Right now there is someone parking cars, waiting tables, or busing tables who is going to be a multi-millionaire movie star within 5 years from now. Another person just bought a winning lotto ticket, three people are working away in a garage on a software program or new smart phone app that will make them billionaires in less than 5 years!
   If any of this is still "possible" how can the American dream be dead?
