What are your secrets to success on HubPages?
Share one helpful "secret" you have discovered as a writer on HP. No need to reveal the details; just enough for a fellow hubber or newbie to explore and figure out for him/herself.
My secret: Use your carousel often and strategically.
Love what you're doing. If you don't enjoy your writing, who will? Find ways to love what you're writing about, learn to love learning about the platform, love the process. Otherwise...you'll probably quit before you find what you were looking for!
Organization. If you don't organize your hubs on a word processor, you have no way to have an overview of what you are doing, what needs to be changed, etc. Same with photos.
When HP says use Amazon or Ebay capsules DIRECTLY associated with your hub - they mean it. I make money regularly now on Amazon because I chose ONE item per hub and I work information on that item into the hub itself and then place a capsule. Make it like advice, not a sales pitch and you'll get many more conversions.
People don't want you to sell to them, they want you to inform them. When you've done your job of informing and/or entertaining them, it builds a sense of trust and value, making them more inclined to follow your recommendation. Even if they just click the link and go to Amazon then buy something else, you still get a commission if it's within a certain amount of time.
No need to just slap stuff on there and see what sticks - it doesn't work. It also harms the rest of us by making HP appear "spammy" and overly commercialized.
I've had a couple of days where my Amazon commissions were in the double dollar digits this week on smaller items that were directly related and talked about from my personal experience. You aren't going to sell a Yacht - but bottles of certain products, or an item here and there you've used with great success that is also at a great price - you can definitely get sales if you don't "sell it" too hard... it's a fine art that I'm still working on.
I'll take a couple dozen under a dollar commissions per week on smaller items I know I can sell, rather than try to push a big ticket item that is not likely to convert.
Janis, Thank you for asking this question Christin, Your answer was extremely helpful. If I myself have a item for sale on Amazon and my article talks about how I made that item plus other examples, can I advertise that item in my article?
I don't see why not, as long as it doesn't violate the self-promotion rule or have too many links etc. but yeah, if you do a whole hub talking about how you did something, I'd certainly link to it, or to something used to create it even, depending.
Christin, I guess we're not supposed to link to the hub we're talking abt, but if you have a sec, it's the one I have on children's book publishing. I put the ad up for my Kindle version. If you don't feel comfortable checking it out, no worries.
If the one I viewed was correct, it's very extensive and thorough and has a link to your children's book. You have many links, but could maybe do a callout and sell the software you use since it's more about creating the book.
ChristinS, your answer is immensely candid and helpful. I appreciate your generosity in helping us move toward success at HP.

I have an Amazon Program Affiliate code through Hubpages and it was my understanding that I would split traffic with Hubpages 60/40. However, this morning when I ran a check on my hubs, I have not seen my ID appear in any Amazon Modules over the 10 hubs I checked. Every time I mouse over the Amazon...

I'm trying to expunge my account of all EBay products since I just realized they don't pay a commission and instead only pay pennies on large sales. Is there an easier method than going hub to hub and deleting them? ...
