How can we encourage people to pickup trash in our neighborhoods? Clean spaces result in less crime.
The "broken window theory" not only applies to the importance of keeping our homes maintained, it's applicable to keeping our neighborhoods clear of garbage. Once a little trash is tossed and neglected, more piles around it. This encourages vandalism. I think we must start with ourselves, setting an example for the neighborhood. Keeping our lawns clear. Next occasionally pick up trash in our surrounding areas. Going on a brisk morning walk while carrying a small plastic bag, wearing gloves or using a long reach grabber is a great workout which also beautifies your city!
It is part of the concept of pride in our neighborhoods. People who have pride are vested in the maintenance and well-being of their neighborhoods. They will do anything to maintain qualitative standards of their particular neighborhoods. Such acts include upkeep and further improvement regarding the quality of their neighborhood. Also, people with such attitudes will not deface their neighborhood in any way and this includes littering and other destructive acts which will depreciate the value of their particular neighborhood.
You are correct, but it would probably take a motivational movement with incentives to get most people on board. Still, starting is something. Good for you!
