superstitious remnant of less enlightened/sophisticated times?

Probably. There would hopefully be a lot less idiots praising other idiots for doing things like say shooting up a planned parenthood office...save the babies cuz God by killing random people that have nothing to do with abortions...

I'm at the point where I would be much more interested to see a world void of religion, rather than one where religion isn't taken as seriously as it is now.

Nobody praises idiots who shoot up planned parenthood.  Most Christians recognize that that was a sick man who was deceived.  And again, God killing people is not the same as people killing people.

Plenty praised him. Plenty also praised the woman who denied the gay marriage license while ignoring she was married 4 different times and also committed adultery to boot.

If God decides to do genocide, free pass...brilliant. Not at all insane.

I don't think religions in generally were intended to bad.. It's people who make religion look bad..people misinterpret the meaning and do extreme things with their extreme beliefs.

Islam calls for death of infidels, kill those who won't convert, demands submission including extra taxes for non-Muslims who accept second class status in Muslim society - terrorists are totally following Mohammed's example and holy book.

Have you read the Bible lately? It calls for a lot of violence also. Several pastors are calling for people to use said violence against those whom they believe God didn't like even in the last 6mths. It's extremists, not religion itself.

In my opinion, religion is one of the guides, one of the moral compass points we refer to on how we behave in society. It clarifies stuff about life here and hereafter.  It is one of the unifying factors of people from different worlds and cultures. I cannot imagine a world without religion. Even pagans have idols that dictate their ways of living. Unfortunately, not all religions are spiritual and moral-based.

No.  If not for religion, the world would be much worse.  As someone so eloquently pointed out on another Q&A, "Because in the world of the atheist boundaries are limited to none, so it doesn't makes sense trying to show them a fence they can't see."  If there are no rules, and you make the rules, then anything goes.

Such as? Both of you neglected to elaborate what boundaries atheists lack, since that would have been too specific and made the point moot...

Also we probably would have had a few less wars and alot less people murdered cuz they were clearly witches

It's not religion that is the problem. it's the people.it's humanity who is at fault.

I think this world would be a bad place with or without religion. This is because of the nature of man. Societies without religion, especially communist societies were filled with horrible crimes even if they were atheist, such as the USSR. In China they allow religion, but it's a watered down version of the actual religion and puts state above deity. North Korea is an atheist state, and horrible things are happening there. So you can't blame religion for the wrongs in this world, but you can blame man. I can't speak for all religions but I was born a Catholic, became a Christian and now am an unchurched Christian. I would go nuts without my faith. We all need to believe in something larger than ourselves. I know my faith to be true, and I can keep this core faith whether I go to a Catholic church or a Christian church. It wouldn't change my core faith, but the teachings have enhanced the quality of my life. So the world would miss something big if it didn't have religion. And absence of religion is no guarantee of utopia.
