Do you think show off attitude is a sin?
We do lot of things everyday varying from worship to routine activities, do you think proud display of any of these amounts to sin?
People make a wrong assumption. Having pride in oneself is not a sin. Vainglory is what is a sin. Vanity. They are different. My children and wife make me proud. If I stare in the mirror and adore myself that is vanity. But if I look in the mirror and say that I am a good person, that is self esteem and good. I clean myself up in the morning and put on respectable clothes and carry myself in a dignified manner. Because I am proud of who I am. God does not make mistakes.
I am a Christian and I am proud of being a Christian. That is good. I think I am better than anyone else - that is bad.
Many people consider a display of a gift to be a bad thing. That is horrible. If Einstein or Martin Luther King did not display their gifts the world would be a far less rich place. We must strive for excellence and be proud when we get close or achieve it. We should be proud to be children of God.
Lording something over someone like the pharisees did is different, it is vanity. To say "look at me, I am great" is vanity. To be proud and not shy of accomplishments and share them with the world is good.
I learn from worshipers that are extremely devout and let me see it. I aspire to their accomplishments. That is a good thing.
Eric I really appreciate the way you think. Excellent way of looking at the overall attitude. Yes, proud is something that praises the self & degrades others. If not this sort of a pride then it's a desirable, one should try his best to look good
That is what I am saying that is not pride that praises self and degrades others -- that is vanity. It is a false religion of praise for oneself. Kind of like making one's self a false idol. Pride is like pleased, glad and happy.
Some times we can have a bit of fun. A friend told me that I was good and great recently. I feel that he was genuinely praising me. But my return text said that I was truly awesome, and that I could not afford to be humble, because I was so great!
I told this story to finds at Sadhana (spiritual worship or practices)) and they all laughed. Now one of them has told her friends and they laughed too. This makes me happy, as they are getting some much needed Joy.
Truly speaking, all actions of themselves are powerless. What matters in action, is a live, vibrant awareness, of the power of Spirit. Sincerity of Purpose; Purity of Intent is paramount at all times, and the Inner Pilot, already knows all.
Sometimes, like me, we tend to have a bit of fun, but generally, pride is usually associated with the small sense of 'i.' the Ego. Nice question, Muhammad. I have not seen you for a while. Salaam!
Thanks manatita, that sense of 'i' is the main thing in differentiating between pride and a selfless action, how do you do that?
It's needed in the beginning, but diminishes as we progress. Sadhana is paramount to enable us to leave the ego-mind; enter into the Heart. Selfless actions are inspired by the Heart, and for this, the inner Light has to be awakened.
Worship.(Spiritual Practices) (Ibadu/ Salat) Life itself is an act of worship. Simply sit in Silence in the small hours of the morning and night. Let what ever you receive guide your days on the street; on buses; trains; at work; on the way home ...
You mean the process (Sadhana) is a source to receive guidance, it means the process must have all the prerequisites required, if yes what's that?
Ha ha. We started with a harmless question. But I like where we are going. My Mentor once said that Meditation is the answer to ALL life's questions.
My answer to you is 'hunger.' We call this Aspiration, and inner cry or longing. Cry as D child
Being authentic of who you are and showing it to the world is the greatest gift that you can give to the world and yourself even if no one acknowledges it while you're alive on earth. You have one life to live and to live it well moment by moment in your life on earth. February 18, 2016 A.D. 8:56am and forever.
