Yes, Especially here in the USA where so many people only speak English. In fact around 75% of our population only speaks one language which is sad in comparison to other countries.
Knowing more than one language is not only just good to know, but also makes it much easier when traveling or finding a career.
When I was in high school the only two options were French and Spanish. I would have loved German or Hindi.
It just makes good sense to have more languages available. There are no downsides to more.

You have the opportunity to learn any language that you want, but don't expect the government to pay for it. It costs less if you do it yourself.
Yes, there are advantages to knowing more than one language, but it is available to everyone

She asked about in colleges and schools, I answered related to that. They already have language classes. College is not paid for by government all the time. I agree it is available, but the conversation was about schools.

And my answer was NO, we shouldn't expand language in schools, it should be done outside of school. And state college are government run, and because of federal school loans, the gov is involved with every college.

Even so, if someone is paying their own tution they should be able to do more. School is about the future of our kids. I'd say language is pretty important for their future. Jmo! Do you think we should take current languages out of schools?

What I said is that we shouldn't expand the existing languages available in school? There is so much more to learn in K-12 and college to keep up with the events and technology? education is a means of getting a good job. Current edu is not good enuf

Wouldn't you say that in an ever growing diverse population that knowing many languages could be very beneficial for finding a job? I can agree to disagree. School currently doesn't do enough IMO so I think adding more languages is ONE good thing.

I had mentioned that I thought learning other lang was good, but not thru the schools as they already are behind on technology, science, and other areas that have new information. Schools are way behind real life, and life keeps moving fwd.

Valid point. I do however think they could revamp the entire system and include more languages along with catching up everything else. The problem is the government runs schools, anytime the government runs anything it never turns out well.
