Some American athletes won't compete in the Rio Summer Olympics due to Zika fears. Would YOU go?
A number of athletes from the United States and other countries are boycotting the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil due to fears they'll catch the Zika virus. Do you think their fears are irrational, or are they being smarter than most?
The Zika virus is a serious concern especially for female athletes considering pregnancy soon.
If there really is no known cure, I'd give it a miss. I have lived in countries where there is malaria but precautions were taken: the appropriate pills, mosquito wire on doors and windows -and especially on infants cribs - In Papua New Guinea these last were cots completely surrounded by fine mess wire. They were jocularly called, 'meat safes,' but did the job.
However this Zika virus seems to have a lot of people, including world authorities quite worried so, to retarate, I'd give it a miss.
I would still go, personally. Most people don't even show symptoms if they have it and those who do usually have mild symptoms that are gone pretty quickly. It seems no more dangerous (maybe even less so) than your average flu.
Obviously pregnant women are the exception, but I don't think any Olympic athletes are pregnant while competing. Seems that people with pre-existing conditions, the elderly, and very young are at a heightened risk of complications (same as with the flu) but again I don't think any of those criteria apply to Olympic athletes who are generally in very good health.
The Olympics are a special and sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity for people - I wouldn't let this deter me at all.
A lot of golfers are bailing on the Olympics. Here's another one:
