What steps should be taken to improve racial relations in the United States? In your
estimation, has racial relations improved or worsened since Barack Obama became President of the United States?
Racism is history in the US since the slaves. When they were freed by Abraham Lincoln, it was better but it persisted. Under Kennedy they started integrating schools. It took that long and the first black student to enter a white college had to have security guards with him. The movements made by black people during the boomer generation also helped. Martin Luther King helped. They all helped to place President Obama in the White House. But racism still exists. I believe there is some "get back" since Obama's presidency. But it is more widely known as well due to social media. It's like the equivalent of seeing Vietnam, the first war, shown on TV. The medium makes it real and in some ways, larger than life.
Grace
The electing of a two term black president in the USA should have been the major adhesive that brought the country together since the Civil War. But, as it turns out, it has been the most divisive effect and made Racism more prevalent and volatile than it has been since the 1960s.
Maybe they are rejecting Obama's white parent?
It is evident that racial relations have worsened since Barack Obama became president.
Restore interracial working class solidarity. Race has always been a divide and conquer tool, used by elites to protect their often dubiously acquired wealth.
Two reading recommendations:
1. You might Google Bacon's Rebellion of 1676
2. The first three or four chapters of Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States.
In the seventeenth century, before African enslavement became the dominant mode of forced labor, black slaves and "white" indentured servants, seeing a commonality in their plights, often ran away, revolted, or found other means of protesting together.
It was only when the Euro-American elite felt the need to bolster his "team,"---in the face of frequent black-white, black-white-Indian joint action---did the concept of "whiteness" come into being.
But alas, we hate talking about class even more than we do race, in the United States of America. Nevertheless, it must be done!
African and Caribbean immigrants do very well in the US economically and in terms of education, despite being black - so problems of the black community can't be due to racism. It is cultural.
Per Walter Williams, black Ivy League economist, black crime rates were lower and employment rates higher in the 1950s - two generations closer to slavery. If we could blame slavery for everything, you'd expect improvement over time, not a deterioration starting in the 1960s - which is linked to black leaders saying sign up for welfare as reparations, causing the illegitimacy rate to soar.
Race relations have declined under the first black president because he blames everything on whites for past injustices (ignoring that the KKK and Jim Crow laws are entirely Democrats) and demonizing all whites with collective guilt while denying any collective credit (600,000 dead whites to end slavery in the US and white Christians ending it worldwide, when slavery was a worldwide institution).
Disagree with Obama's socialist policies? Racist, evil, not allowed any rational basis for disagreeing.
Disagree with open borders to bring in more people from mostly socialist nations? Racist, bigoted, irrational hater.
Disagree with affirmative action and set-aside contracts that favor blacks? Racist, evil, shut up.
Want federal contracts? You get preference if you implement social engineering policies that push diversity training on all people, that all men are sexist, all whites are racist, all heterosexuals are phobic.
Then you have Black Lives Matter. It is not a response to police brutality, because whites and Hispanics killed by cops don't matter to them. They don't care about the tens of thousands of blacks killed by other blacks each year, many of them innocent bystanders and children.
The only black lives that matter to them are taken by cops, and they readily say they want to kill whites - without any consequence, too. That destroys race relations.

And that's on top of the insane double standard that Twitter even allows the hashtag #killallwhites to even exist much less violent rhetoric accompanying it, while criticizing a black actress gets a gay Brit a lifetime ban.

The article came from an opinion piece in the New York Times, I would have liked to provide a simpler link. But, it was not possible. I think that this article below written by Mr. Janelle Bouie is both spot on and timeless, and explains my attitude in regard to this issue and countless others. The...
