A new agency - Global Engagement Center’s - job's to combat FAKE NEWS around the world. Good /bad?

The legislation to combat "fake" news is in the new The National Defense Authorization Act of 2017.
This is for an agency that is supposed to combat the type of thing that we saw in the 2016 elections - crooked politicians, like hillary Hillary, trying to rig the primaries. pay for play at the Clinton Foundation.
The problem with this is that the government is deciding what is "real", what is "fake" news.
For example, the journalist who exposed fast and furious died broke and blacklisted, though his articles are true.
The WMD's that weren't in Iraq wouldn't be exposed.
    Censorship good?

I think you're confused about what fake news is.

A fake news story is one that is made up from nothing, with no factual information supporting it. It's simply a big, fat lie.

Two examples from the recent campaign period:

    * Hillary Clinton is running a child sex ring out of a pizza shop.

    * Thousands of people at a Donald Trump rally in Manhattan chanted, "We hate Muslims, we hate blacks, we want our great country back."

    Both stories are complete lies.

In your examples, you mention WMDs that weren't in Iraq. The fake news story was that there were stockpiles of WMDs in Iraq. The true news story was that there were no WMDs. We went to war over the fake news story, which was put out by the Bush administration to justify invading Iraq. The true news was reported as it happened: that each time a supposed stockpile was located, there was nothing there.

I think cracking down on truly fake news stories---stories put out simply as clickbait, without any facts to support them---would be helpful to those who seem to not know, or not care, that the stories they're reading are complete bull. I'm not sure we need yet another government agency for it.

For example: The National Defense Authorization Act. I Googled it. Here's what it really is:

"The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is a United States federal law specifying the budget and expenditures of the United States Department of Defense."

    Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_ … zation_Act

Having said all that, I don't think there should be any limitation on opinion. If someone says, "In my opinion, there are huge stockpiles of WMDs in Iraq, and we should find them", that's an editorial, not a news story. It should be labelled as such. People can think whatever they like, and write whatever they like---but they should stop calling their opinions news.

So, you going to tell CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS to state they are entertaining and NOT giving out actual news?
For example "Russia tried to sway the election in 2016" No facts to back it up. Opinions yes, but no facts.
DNC facts show rigging of primary.

      Your opinion: not facts.
Reports from 17 intelligence agencies, verifying that Russians hacked the DNC: based on facts, not opinions.
You can't say hacked emails show rigging without accepting the fact the DNC was hacked to sway the election.

Hacked or not, the DNC and hillary killary's camping showed the corruption - based on facts.
Why has the CIA declined to share info to Congress. Everything I read is an analysis, not a fact.
      Show me the proof....

its not censorship. banning someone for a political view is censorship. this is stopping lies masquerading as truth. its stopping the yelling of fire in a crowded theatre. its saving lives....as you saw a man take a gun to go after an alleged paedophile that he heard about through the internet and radio. saying hillary sold weapons to isis, and the pope supports trump affected a presidential election. these lies affect real lives. and if someone told such a lie on you, you'd be livid. if they need to lie, they can write a piece of fiction and get their jolly's off that way. lies have no place in the public discourse, and should be prevented as much as possible. why invite blatant falsehood?

So, does this mean that hillary killary's illness that was "fake " news that turned out to be real should have been stopped?
Or the Fast and furious which was denied and then proven to be true?
Why would lies from the government be OK?

this is not designed for gvt, but for places like facebook and the like. "read my lips, no new taxes"is not as damaging as "they are selling baby parts", and a man shoots up a clinic. stochastic terrorism its called.

Leslie, It's in legislation sitting on obmama's desk, so it has everything to do with government.
And it's the government that is the purveyor of most fake news than anyone else. Just read hillary killary's emails. Lies, lies and more lies.

there is such a thing as the right to privacy. i know it means nothing to you, unless its yours, but the rest of us matter, too.and there are such things as honor and decency. if idiots cant supply that on their own, they have no business spreading it

Then why does the Washington Post put up a list of "fake" websites that are "fake" according to anonymous sources that are afraid to show themselves?
Why is the WP saying Russia hacked when they provide NO proof that Russia hacked, just opinions?

Nope, they do not have proof, they have opinions and conclusions, but no smoking gun - like, "Here's the proof"
You're great at deflecting, but no proof has been offered like it has for hillary killary, he DNC and the mass media collusion.

have you seen the intelligence?dont know how you can say that without benefit of that. and i choose to believe that hillary and obama know enough to judge. and mccain and graham, as theyve been hacked, too. trump? hes already suspect by his vlad-love

"It was an analysis of what many believe is overwhelming circumstantial evidence"
Key word - analysis - no smoking gun, no evidence to take to a jury and prove Russia was the one the exposed facts that hilly killary and the DNC were corrupt.

i dont know where you read, i read usic is confident russia hacked, and furthermore, is the same tactic they have used in other countries. to destabilize and effect outcomes that work in their interests. to me, it makes perfect sense and i believe it

      Leslie,
Usually the problems a person has in their lives is of their own making.
Instead of blaming others, look at yourself, your biases, attitude. Maybe you change, the world looks better.
Or stay miserable - your choice.
      Always your choice.

And what do you do to help out the poor?  You give all your money away to the poor? I doubt it. I think you're as greedy as hillary killary and bernie sanders
