As a parent, what WOULD YOU do if your recent college graduate child REFUSED to work,
expecting you to support him/her until h/she found a job in his/her field?
It seems weird that you're implying that they are both REFUSING to work and also saying that they are looking for work? Which is it? If they're trying to find a job, but simply haven't found one yet, that's totally not the same thing as REFUSING to work.
I don't know what it's like in anyone else's family, but in mine, you're either in school, or you're working. That goes for anyone old enough to hold a job. You study, or you work. Not in school? Get a job. Want to avoid working? Go to school.
I'm not sure where kids living with their parents get the idea they can refuse to work, and continue to have a roof over their heads. Who is raising these entitled brats? In my family, they'd find their clothes in boxes on the curb, and the locks changed in pretty short order.
That's the way it has been with my family too Lisa. Even my grandkids, school/work.
Different cultures tolerate different behavior. Immigrant families are much more likely to tolerate behavior Americans wouldn't. American parents seem to suffer little with the thought of pitting their children to wolves.
Immigrant families? My grandparents were immigrants. Everybody works, or contributes to the family by going to school. I was told going to school was my job when I was a kid. There was no leeway or refusing if I wanted to live at home.
For sure they wouldn't live with me as they will learn fast enough that nothing comes for free. If they need to go on welfare for a while, they can. I could not and would not put up with laziness unless they were sick. Perhaps they need a psychological review and medical exam to determine if there is a reason. Otherwise, good luck with that. Gratefully all of my children have found a way to make a living and they are all college graduates. I have a hard time understanding why someone would refuse to work after getting a degree if they were well. Don't feed into their laziness. There are plenty of jobs available even if they don't meet up to their standards. All of my children worked during their college and for that I am grateful for. Their spouses also helped most of the time.
