$500 US dollar in the 19th century, what is the worth?
I am watching "the last Samurai" an Tom Cruse's character just got offer $500 per month to help train Japan's army and that was a lot of money. So...who know what is the worth of $500 in 19th century?
Well, don't take this to the bank, but according to the only historic calculator I found that goes back to 1880 shows that $500 would be worth $11,350 in 2017 dollars. Based on two other calculators that go back to 1914, in 1914 that $500 would be worth $12,250. Based on that, I'm assuming that $11,350 might be a little low, so I'd take a swag that $500/month would be worth $13,500/month.
I was thinking the same thing about the value of $400.00 in the 18th C. earlier today while watching "Africans in America (Part 2) on YouTube. When a man named Venture worked to purchase freedom for his two sons (they were priced at $200.00 each) by chopping wood. Image how many cords he chopped?

What are your favorite novels that were written in the 19th Century? Some of my favorites in this category would have to include Middlemarch, Les Miserables, The Brother's Karamazov, and Anna Karenina. At least that's what I can think of, off of the top of my head.
