    to its dismal end.

    Or not!

... what will that end/future look like in California?

Well, it looks like California is going to need a little "Socialist" help to recover from these devastating wildfires. Or do you think they should stand on their own two feet like good Republicans believe people should? Oh, yeah, I remember something about a Yuge government bailout when enormous corporate banks and savings and loan institutions failed a few years back.

Presumably they have home insurance.  If not then, yes, they need to stand on their own two feet.

          Not enough feet, apparently.

Many insurance companies are no longer offering fire insurance coverage in several areas of California.

Sure, let's not care for those anywhere in our country. Neither hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, diseases, drought, or famine should sway us from our selfish ideals!

Like it or not western states and most especially California has a terrible maintenance record for state and national fire prevention .  Human laziness and economics is the best description of the needs for preventative maintenance at the residential and commercial levels , the municipal , county and state level ? Same thing .

All the state and federal resources for preventative forestry are diverted to ineffective "administrative " costs .  unionized labor ,  building and vehicular costs ,  in other words when they* decide to stop shuffling papers and put boots on the ground to prevent fires , to get off their administrative backsides and pay for work in the fields instead of the offices , then they will have made positive inroads for fire prevention.

    *The people of California

So typical of most western states , especially California , to cry "Fire" for major federal economic gain and diversionary budgeting away from the actual fire costs , then wait for the fall weather changes to actually put out the fires .  All the while a very expensive "management " loaded down with high cost administrators and their pension plans eats up the financial bank accounts.

State socialism at it's finest hour , I always thought "socialism " was all about ".....everyone working in the fields ......." Apparently not in Californika .

Ed, do you know what the Forestry administrative costs vs. field costs are?

I don't, but your statement says you do, so I thought I would ask - How do you know field costs are sacrificed to administrative costs? What is the percentage of administrating vs. doing costs?"

G.A. We all know most tax , revenue or Fed dollars are going into the general state funds and being dispersed according to Gov. Brown's fantasy world  however   I've read a lot about USFS wildland firefighting problems ,  This is entirely a management issue even when you add in the "climate change " debate , it still remains mostly a forestry practices problem .

You can do your own homework assignment.

No worries Ed. I am not interested enough to research the topic. I just thought the certainty of your comment meant you did know.

GA, I doubt seriously ED ever fought a wildfire or practiced any sort of preventative measures in a forest. Meanwhile, I being a landowner with a fair amount of woodland on my property--several hundred acres--have practiced good forestry management including preventative burning.

I can assure you wildfires aren't the same everywhere. In California the terrain and weather makes it difficult to control burn vast stretches of woodland, and there's no way the forest floor could be kept clear of debris. I'd like to hear ED say how he'd solve the problem out there.

Randy , I know that it's a very remote possibility of your getting this  but for one , it's called manual labor , No not Manuel labor ......manual labor .

GA. Ya , I get it that you're not interested enough to go look it up but ,  you might think about it , if nothing else for the sake of really just knowing of what your discussing .

Rule # 1 , remove brush next to pavement = Pavement is oil ?

      That's your solution?  lol lol

How many fires have you fought, ED? I doubt you ever had your hands sooty before doing 'manual labor' for fire prevention. Or have you? tongue

You misunderstood my comment Ed. I am not interested enough to do a budget drill-down to find out how the administrative personnel costs vs. operational costs  compare - which appeared to be the point of your comment that I responded to.

It wasn't a reply directed to management, or, mismanagement practices - which seems to be the direction you are taking now.

As far as knowing what I am discussing, I thought I was discussing your claim about management personnel costs, and since I didn't know, and your I response indicated you did - I was hoping you would help inform me.

However, if you want to revisit the point about bloated management costs, I will check out the USFS budget details and get back to you.

Randy , If I told you I was a volunteer firefighter for eighteen and a half years training for and fighting all sorts of residential , commercial and even wildland fires would you believe me....... ?

As I stated earlier ED, I've never actually observed you debating anyone, simply posting memes and insults is your usual MO.

Randy , your problem is is that you never study the issues that you bore everybody with in your posts ,  for instance your post about Trump being afraid to visit war zones , his fear of rain and cemeteries ? Seriously ?  , You have any idea at all about how simplistic that entire rant sounds ?
Or did you write that for some sophomore H.S. debating class ?

GA. , My point is generally about management of wildland firefighting practices in western US circa 1920s to the most recent decades and their most recent altered practices  , the federal aid for these disasters I really know little about but can sure guess.   Western US. wildland firefighting in  these previous decades has been to prioritize "put out the fire as #1 " ,  maybe then someday get around to the maintenance of brushlands and former logging operations .

These practices are quite recently being altered to eliminate the "tinder boxes " that have developed for decades because of that previous policy . Now however , USFS and  Calfire for instance is doing more pre-work to eliminate brushlands ,  poor forestry practices , hyper-monitoring logging and new home development practices ,....etc

    As you may recall  there have been several firefighting disasters in recent years involving dozens of deaths to wildland firefighters , A couple of charts below show some of the the details ;

While the news media is busy making this all about "Trump Tweets' , there is a history of both federal , state and local agency negligence in this continuum ,
