Auto-Refreshing Ads Are a No-No

The HP niche sites have more auto-refreshing ads than my hamster has fleas. AdSense says publishers are not allowed to do this. I sincerely hope HP/Maven have been granted an exemption on this.

I haven't seen any. HP ads seem pretty decorous to me, on the whole.

This is what Google has to say though...

    Auto-refreshing ads
Publishers are not permitted to refresh a page or an element of a page without the user requesting a refresh. This includes placing ads on pages or in placements that auto-redirect or auto-refresh. Additionally, publishers may not display the ads for a preset time (i.e., pre-roll) before users can view content such as videos, games, or downloads.

I saw your post and checked 3 random hubs (mine, using straight AdSense). It's intermittent; happened on one of the 3 when scrolling down (third ad down on right side I believe). If memory serves, I saw it happen repeatedly with the HP Ad Program in the past, but not absolutely sure; I'll post if/when I see it on the HP Ad Program this weekend.

Thanks for posting the quote and link, I was too lazy.big_smile

Happened to all 3 articles that I looked at, all on different niche sites (Delishably, Owlcation, & Wehavekids). I use the HP Ad Program if that matters. Not sure what you mean by that. I checked one of my articles and 2 from other authors. The third ad down on the right hand side just like you said. The ad below the popular listed article section. It scrolls with you and flashes a new ad or cycles through 3 different ads the whole time. Rather annoying. I feel like I would have noticed this if it happened in the past.

Honestly though, I do not read articles on niche sites anymore since the move to Maven, as it's become too much of a hassle. If I'm looking for something I search Google and whatever comes up on the first few pages is what I will read, sometimes it's niche sites but usually it's not. I only go directly there if I find something in the forums worth checking out or investigating.

Edit: Have there always been ads between comments in the comment section? The article I just read had 2 or 3 ads between comments. I know most people probably do not scroll through all of them, but that seems like more of a reason to not place them there? I feel like the articles I read had way too many ads. I don't remember being bombarded by so many ad's before. All three of them had a least 7. Some had the banner ad making the ad count go up to 8. Has there always been that many?

Yes, comments always had those extra ads in. From what I figured out, the more comments you have, the more ads you've got.

Also, that refreshing ad is not something new. It's there at least from the last quarter of 2018 if memory serves me right.

Sounds like AdSense is fine with it for HP. Meanwhile, I jacked up the number of ads on my website when I discovered the 3-ad limit had been removed for us peons; decided to not be a pig about and limited it to 4.big_smile

Interesting. Like I said I haven't really read many HP (niche site or otherwise) articles in several months and only do so if I'm looking for something I found in a forum discussion. Most of my articles do not have many comments either since I did not start gaining a good amount of traffic until this past year which is also when I started getting more comments. So it's likely something I would not have noticed earlier.

So HP has special rules that are allowed by Adsense? I was reading through the link that Will posted above, not sure I understood most of it, but I do like to try and learn as much as I can. That link says that "sticky" ads are restricted. I read that as not allowed, but I suppose it could also mean limited. Besides the refreshing sticky ad, I also found this other ad...

What about ads like this that I saw on a Turbofuture article I was reading. That seems like it also goes against Adsense rules as well, since it pushes the content under the fold and the ad takes up the whole screen until I scroll farther down. I'm using a Chromebook if that matters.

Sorry forgot to include a snapshot of the ad I was talking about.

Thanks for the HP Ad Program confirmation.

As for the number of ads; yep, HP always does push the limit. Fortunately, HP has stated in the past that AdSense has given them an exemption to do that.

These ads are becoming horrible. Two days ago I was searching for something on Google and Dengarden was one of the results, so I tapped to view. While reading an ad loaded up (as a new page) and when I hit back the tab closed (this meant there was no back webpage to go to). I searched again and made sure I clicked on another result and not Dengarden.
